Default Break In Period

I own a 2010 F150 with about 4000 miles on it, I am concerned about the break in period. Any suggestions??

You are broke in. Too late to tell you what you should have done for the 1st 1000 milws. If you have not changed the oil, I would do so.

Manual says that an oil change isn't needed until 7500 miles - why do you think it's needed earlier?

Because the engine is full of loose metal fragments that Ford left in there. Also all the parts are so tight that the friction shaves metal off as the parts are getting loosened up.

Honestly, I have no idea. I just did my first oil change at 7100 miles. I will trade it in around 65k so I figure she should hold up until then.

What does you manual say for severe usage. I have a 08 superduty and it has severe usage intervals and regular use intervals. Thing is Ford considers about everything people do as sever usage. Drive a lot in stop and go, put any weight in your box, or pull anything Ford calls it server usage.

Yes, read the section of the manual that mentions this. If you are concerned.

And, congrats on your new truck also!

Cool

I just passed 5000 miles and the motor is stronger than ever. I babied it the first 500 miles and didn't pull a trailer till 1,000. Now it's hammer down and treat it like a truck.

I personally think it is a good idea to change that initial oil change around 3000 to 4000 miles. A tight engine is going to have some metal cast offs...just a fact. While I realize the manual says oil changes every 7500...I feel more comfortable at every 5000...but that is just me.

drive it like you stole it for the first 3k, then change the oil

or at least I drove mine like I stole it for the first 3k, and the "Change Engine Oil Soon" notification came on at about 4k, therefore I changed it at 4k and am getting great gas mileage, much better than before, so I'd say it's well broken in

I agree...its amazing how putting some miles on the truck improves the gas mileage!
