Default Tekonsha brake controller

Yes, but very rare to find a basic f150 on a dealer's lot that has the Ford integrated brake controller option from the factory so unless you are ordering your truck like having the factory build what you want you are gonna have to be happy with an aftermarket controller. The inexpensive Tekonsha Voyager works fine for me.

NOTE: The trailer brake system is normally installed at the assembly plant, however, the system can be installed at the dealership but only if the vehicle is equipped with the trailer tow option. This option can be confirmed by verifying the presence of both the 4-pin and the 7-pin connectors at the rear of the vehicle as well as a receiver hitch. If the vehicle is not equipped with these 3 items, then it is not equipped with trailer tow and cannot have the factory Trailer Brake Control (TBC) system installed. On those vehicles equipped with the trailer tow option, the electrical connector for the TBC module is attached to the back of the coin bin/storage tray. If the system is installed at the dealership, the TBC module will be installed in place of the coin bin/storage tray and the Instrument Cluster (IC) must be configured to communicate with the TBC module. Refer to the Wiring Diagrams manual, Cell 95 Trailer/Camper Adapter and Cell 151 Component Location Views for connector and wiring information. Refer to Programmable Parameters in the Diagnosis and Testing portion of this section for information on IC configuration.

  • Without a trailer connected to the vehicle and with the ignition key turned to the RUN position, the TBC module display lights up/proves out, but does not light up afterward (will not illuminate with input from the gain + button or slide lever)
  • Instrument Cluster (IC) not configured for TBC system
  • REFER to DTC U2202 in the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) Module DTC Chart.

got this from my dealer...just needs to be programed...

show the dealer this...

Programmable Parameters
The message center will display TBC FAULT if it is receiving communications from the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) module, but has not been configured for a trailer brake system. If the message center displays TBC FAULT and there are no DTCs stored in the TBC module, follow these steps to verify and/or modify the TBC module programmable parameter in the Instrument Cluster (IC).
  1. Identify the vehicle using the normal Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) process.
  1. Select Programming and press the check box.
  1. Select Module Programming and press the check box.
  1. Select Programmable Parameters and press the check box.
  1. Select Personality and press the check box.
  1. Follow the on-screen directions.
  1. NOTE: The scan tool will display either EQUIPPED or NOT EQUIPPED to the left of TBC-IC.
    Highlight TBC-IC.
  1. If the IC needs to be configured for a trailer brake system, choose EQUIPPED and press the check box.
  1. Carry out a self-test of the TBC module. Refer to the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) Module DTC Chart for any DTCs retrieved.

fbomb, I don't understand. Are you saying that if the trailer tow package is not ordered then the truck has no connector behind the coin/storage bin or anywhere else? The 2004-2008 f150 has a 6 pin connector for after-market controllers regardless of whether the tow package is ordered. (See e.g. etrailer.com info and video). So do earlier years. Why isn't this standard wiring in the '09? Ford requires the actual trailer tow page only if you regularly tow more than 5000 lbs (per the manual and towing guide) to avoid voiding your warranty. Yet Ford says that the truck brakes are meant to handle a trailer of no more than the payload (in my case just under a 2000 lbs) and most states require separate trailer braking systems beyond 3000 lbs. You buy a full-size truck you likely will be towing sometimes - how can you not have a place to quickly wire in a trailer brake controller? Splicing in a brake controller sounds like a bad idea with todays trucks computer systems, 5 amp wires, etc..

Regardless, my truck came with the trailer tow package and a sealed jumper package in the glovebox with instructions that show tne 14 pin connector being below the dashboard not behind the storage bin. The factory is playin' hide and seek with the dealers who all said that I had no controller wiring connector.

I would love to hear whether Ernie's 5oh was able to make the Ford integrated brake controller work and if so, how? Has anybody else been able to add the Ford brake controller to a 2009 F150 and make it work? What does it take?

it can be done....if you have the hitch and the 7 pin plug in the rear you are fine...
after installing the unit install the fuse and breaker...go to the dealer and have it turned on...they have to use ids to turn on....i did mine monday...
no porblems....works great...

thanks

Default Video for Brake Controller Install on '09 F-150

A little late to the game here. Just traded my '00 F-250 XLT 4x4 for an '09 F-150 XLT 4x2. I plan on swapping my Tekonsha P-3 from the old vehicle to the new one. Just a thought on the weird power-on sequence: Did you also install the new fuse and relay in the fuse module as instructed? Don't know if it would work with/without these, but its another check you could do.

Check out this 'Etrailer.com' video. Shows where to find the factory harness plug and how to remove the dash to access the plug. Very simple if you have the OEM tow package installed...

Default Installed a Tekonsha P-3 in my '09 XLT

Swapped the P-3 from my old SD into the new truck today. Dash panels removed easily, just as in the Etrailer video. Hooked the new factory wire loom (spliced to the old controller loom) up to the multi-pin connector plugged into the back of the storage bin (driver's side just right of the steering wheel) and ran it out thru a small slot I cut into the panel under the steering column (3 screws below and two pushpins at the top to remove). Mounted the unit to the same panel right of the wheel at a spot where I can see the display thru the wheel.

Figger if I need to sell the truck and someone doesn't need the controller, that panel won't cost an arm/leg to buy OTC. Hooked up the trailer and everything works great. Anyone with a little bit of skill can do this install. Now, my truck DID come with the factory tow pkg, so it's probably simpler than wiring one without....

The fuse and relay is only required for charging a trailer battery through the 7 pin connector.

My XLT came with the Ford brake controller installed from the factory. It also had the harness, relay, and fuse packaged for connecting an aftermarket controller which I thought was odd. After connecting my travel trailer, I realized the tuck wasn't charging the trailer battery. No 12v at the 7 pin connector.

I figured out I still had to install the fuse and relay to enable the charging. The brake controller itself function fine though without the fuse and relay.
