Not knocking costco but that's how almost all major tire retailers do it. The reputable ones anyways. They aren't special in that respect.

And I bet they charge for that Pro-Rated Road Hazard Warranty. Discount tire gives you that at no cost, the road hazard warranty they offer at an extra cost (which is exclusive to them) is for free replacement of the tire, not a pro-rated discount.

The michelins are the best tire on the market no doubt about it, but they aren't quite what I would call a "value for the buck" tire. They are incredibly expensive tires, and the only thing that really justifies this is having 5k mile longer warranty than other similar tires and a better ride.

I think most people would agree they could sacrifice a little ride and 5k miles of warranty for a tire that could cost 2/3 of the Michelin.

For example a Cooper Discoverer HTP P265/70R17 retails around ~$145 a tire with a 65k mile warranty.

A Michelin LTX M/S2 P265/70R17 retails around ~$220 a tire with with a 70k mile warranty.

Clearly the Cooper in this situation is the better Bang for your buck tire. Now that isn't always the case but I see this happen a lot every day. The michelins are the best tire on the market and if you have the money to spend on them you should! (I do) But if your trying to get value for your money there are better tires.
