Here is a crude drawing I did up, sorry, don't want to pull the tailgate apart. There is an opening on the tailgate where you can see the arm that moves when the tailgate locks. You have to bend the pin in a L shape and attach to the lock arm with as seen in the left side of my drawing.

I drilled holes in the metal and bend the mounting plate that came with the kit (right side of the drawing). This dropped the motor to the same level as the lock arm. Mount that where the holes are drilled and feed the bar through the motor and wire it up. This worked well for me.

I bought just an actuator. It didn't come with the plate or mounting screws. I guess I have to manufacture a plate. Anyone know the size of the plate they used?

It was about 10" long, 1/2" wide and had holes for mounting (similar to metal strapping but rigid.).

1.25" hose clamp = $0.99 + 15 minutes

The first picture is looking from the top (top of gate to the right). Gate open looking down at the bed.

The second picture is looking up underneath the bumper with the gate shut (rear of truck to the left).

I installed the clamp using a wrench to tighten the clamp from underneath while the gate was shut (not an easy task by the way). There is no access to the nut on the clamp with the gate open.
Mine came with a tailgate lock from my dealer as they said the tailgates are a prime target..

$90 for a kit vs $5 for the actuator and some ingenuity. I spent a total of $5 (had the consumables already; wire, connectors, etc.) and my setup has been rock solid since I installed it in May.

If you are not mechanically inclined, buy a kit and save yourself a headache.
