I drilled holes in the metal and bend the mounting plate that came with the kit (right side of the drawing). This dropped the motor to the same level as the lock arm. Mount that where the holes are drilled and feed the bar through the motor and wire it up. This worked well for me.

I just installed a tailgate "lock". I know its not 100%, but it will deter any tailgate thief long enough so that they (hopefully) just leave. And yes, I still lock my tailgate with my regular key. This is if they bust through the handle lock and want to try and take my tailgate.
1.25" hose clamp = $0.99 + 15 minutes
The first picture is looking from the top (top of gate to the right). Gate open looking down at the bed.
The second picture is looking up underneath the bumper with the gate shut (rear of truck to the left).
I installed the clamp using a wrench to tighten the clamp from underneath while the gate was shut (not an easy task by the way). There is no access to the nut on the clamp with the gate open.

If you are not mechanically inclined, buy a kit and save yourself a headache.
