I basically measured and used cardboard cutouts to mock up the design then cut the wood to match the cardboard. Here's a couple of pics before painting/caulking and adding trim around the edges to hold the trash bag in place. I sized it to fit plastic grocery bags since we end up with infinity of those things and I do use a bungee to hold the bag in place just to keep the bag rattle to a minimum when the windows are down.

My contribution! Not sure if it is under $50 as it is scrap, but I think it is close? If anyone does this mod, make yourself a cardboard template for the aluminum. It is difficult to use the OEM plastic cover to transfer holes because of the indentations!

Speaking of trash can mods, I did this infamous mod to my 2001 F-150 and don't see why it wouldn't work on a 2009+. Best part, only costs $3.95 (well maybe more with inflation since I originally came up with the idea).

I actually saw them in a early shark tank episode under a different name and then came across them in Walmart last year on sale for 10 bucks.
I dissected one and it's basically 2 LED's powering a panel with a transparent film overlay that comes off. Powered by 2 AA batteries, that activate when 2 sensors are true (truck in motion, lack of light)...and then turn off after 2 minutes of no motion.
The custom overlay I created was pretty simple. I basically picked up some printable overhead transparency film from Office Depot, sized my image correctly, printed 2 times on the same film sheet to give the black more depth and used the original overlay as a cutting template. I then popped it in place and done
credit the developers, it's a pretty cool technology
