The hitch is always easy to install... or most of the time it is. The rails are not that easy and you need rails for any hitch.

Personally wouldn't tow a 5th wheel with a 5.5 box. You might not be able to have the pin right on top of the axel. You'll need a slider for sure.

We have been looking at the Jayco's and really like the 23.5RBS. It has a different floorplan from most and provides a large open area. Our bumper pull is so narrow that one person has to sit to let someone pass.

According to the Jayco dealer, the storage/holding tanks are either over or behind the axle so that helps with the weight. The problem is the closest on is over 1K miles away. Prices are not too bad, way less than the list at numerous dealers and may drop as the model year drags on. Probably warrants a road trip. However, the search for other brands to consider continues.
With the Jayco, you can get the optional Reese Revolution/Sidewinder pinbox designed for the 5'7" box. It moves the 5er away from the cab in turns and a lot less weight than the Pullrite SuperGlide.

The ONLY way I would tow a 5er with a 5.5 bed is with a SuperGlide or Sidewinder. If I was a full timer, or towed quite alot I would have gone that route, but I only tow my camper 6-10 times a year at most, so the Andersen was perfect for me.

You're appareantly talking about a TT, but my post was about a 5er. TTs have a normal hitch weight of 12 to 15 percent, so your 11 percent was lighter than normal. 5ers have pin weight of 15 to 25 percent, and the average medium-size 5er will have a hitch weight around 17 percent.

With a 5.5 you must have slider. There is just room for error with that short of a bed and I would say you need to go with a auto slider to really be safe while towing.

Oh yes no my 5th wheel is 11percent pin weight. Like I said its all about how you load. Remember it's just a big teeter tater. load more in the back well you get the idea. My truck will sage about two inches or less with no air in the bags. Just get the right trailer and you will be fine. I have even seen people more the axles of the trailer forward by just two inches taking weight of the pin. Just do you research.

Default Thanks for all the input!

SeaRayder, the dealer I have been talking to also recommended the sidewinder. I am going to read up on both of the hitches you mentioned. We are still a ways off from making a decision on a fiver and hitch system. I have really appreciated everyone’s input positive and negative.

Currently we are looking at:

Jayco Eagle Super Lite HH 23.5RBS with a dry pin weight (DPW) of 1055 lbs (thanks to whoever suggested it). This is the current front runner

Springdale 242FWRLSSR with a DPW of 980 lbs,

Wildwood 24BHSS with a DPW of 1050

Salem 24BHSS with a DPW of 1050

Bullet 252FL with a DPW of 1055

Rockwood 8280WS with a DPW of 1046

The hard part is finding the units to look at. The closest Jayco is in North Carolina 600 miles from here. There are dozens of dealers within a couple of hundred miles, but don’t stock the models we want to look see.

If you are anywhere close, the Hershey PA RV show is one of the biggest in the country and takes days to go through them all. I spent 2 days just going through TT bumper pulls, we didn't go into anything we weren't looking to buy. lol

Look up RV shows in your surrounding areas, this gives you a chance to look at everything and there are some sweet show deals! My friend just bought a 30' with all the bells and whistles for $8000 off, downside, they have thousands of people go though it the whole week. lol

I just saw the Hershey PA show in one of the travel channels. I used to live fairly close to Hershey and have been there without the RV show.

We have the Tampa show, which we missed in January and the West Palm Beach show which we went to and saw everything in about two hours. A lot of the Florida dealers that sold nothing bur RV's went under because of the economy. My local Jayco dealer was one of them. The West Palm Show was about 1/2 to 1/4 the size it was in 2006. The Tampa show is still pretty good but just couldn't make it over there. I hot excited when one of the local dealers had one of the models were were looking at listed on their website, but later found that all they do are factory orders. Lots of pictures but nothing on the lot except for used models, of which there was nothing of interest.
