Default How do 3.73's add 1500# towing

Looking at the 2011 f150 towing selector, a 3.73 5.0 scab or screw has a 1500# better tow capacity rating than the 3.55. How is that possible?

I noticed gvwr on the 3.73 seems to be 150# more as well.

Think back to you bicycle days. You shift to a low gear. You get more torque but have to pedal more. Same thing with 3.73 over 3.55 the latter has to spin more giving more torque hence being able to tow more.

In my experience in setting up differentials when I wrenched for a living, the +/- 3.50 mark in gear ratios was the cut-off point. Anything lower (higher number) than about 3.50 - 1 ratio had much beefier ring gears than the higher (lower numbers) gear ratios.

GVWR is not only rated on what the springs/suspension can hold, but what the running gear can safely motate for extended mileage. The most critical is the diff gears.

I'm sure someone will jump in and add/detract from this info.

Because Mfgs can make it up as they go along right now. I seriously doubt that gear change actually provides for another 1500 lbs towing power! Here's a great article how the mfg's play with those numbers……..

im asking because i have my 3.55 scab and am looking at travel trailers. I know i need to stay around 5300-5600lbs dry weight, 6300 loaded.

If i trade mine in on a 3.73 SCREW, i can look at heavier trailers and open up my options. But if the numbers are fluff, maybe i continue on with my truck.

Power band. It may use slightly more fuel when not towing, but with my camper behind my truck, it will actually stay in 6th gear on the highway on smaller hills because of the amount of torque available at lower RPMs with the EB.

But also as mentioned, adding the 3.73 axle also includes the max trailer tow or max payload packages depending if you go with a limited slip or locker. So part of the difference is also attributable to the heftier springs/shocks and upgraded cooling.

If everyone adopted SAE J2807 towing standard, it would cut through the fluff and marketing hype. Maybe one day.
