Oh, I see, makes sense now. Thanks for that, freddyttt. My phone, which is a Galaxy S5, is paired through the Alpine itself for Call audio (Use for phone audio) and Media audio (Use for media audio). Currently, when I press the phone button on the steering wheel, the screen on the head unit states SYNC at the top and asks if I want to connect a phone. I just exit out of it. Like I said though, I don't even use Sync anymore.
Instead, if I want to use voice commands, I just hold down the phone button for 3 seconds that is just to the left of the NAV button of the Alpine. I can then use voice commands to make calls, play tracks, etc. Yes, it will also read text messages as you asked.
In order for this to work successfully, you have to have Car Mode on your device enabled and connected as well, which, it should recognize the head unit via the bluetooth connection. Once this is set successfully, you should be good to go. Hope this helped out a bit!!

Most HUs require extra needed cables, for it to work for video.
