6.2 vs 5.0
This thread isn't meant for bashing either engine I'm just having a hard time deciding on getting a 2012 xlt 5.0 or waiting until 2013 so I can get the 6.2 in an xlt. Can anyone help with the pros and cons of each motor? I'm the type I like more power the better but I also know the 5.0 has lots of power ad no doubt better milage. There's good deals on 2012's right now so I don't know if i should pull the trigger now or wait and pay probably a lot more for a '13. Thanks guys

I compared the same motors, and pretty much decided the 5.0 isn't different enough from my 5.4 (in regards to power) to justify the change to that motor. I like the power of the 6.2L, however, I don't care for thee fuel economy. I live in SC and work in OH, and I drive home every other weekend. So the fuel economy is kind of important to me. In the end, I've pretty much decided the EcoBoost is the best of both worlds; good power and good fuel economy. So I'm probably going to order a '13 Limited. If the EcoBoost has a ton of problems, I'll be revisiting the 5.0 vs 6.2 comparison and try to decide which is more important to me, power or fuel economy. I don't feel either is compromised with the EcoBoost.

I don't think you can go wrong with either really. If you dont need the power, then go get your new truck now for a solid deal. Both engines seem to be holding up nicely, and most people that have either are very happy with them.
I tested a 6.2L, and that thing has some serious guts to it. I guess its all in what you want/need. I'm not sure the price difference in the engines, but I'd imagine its somewhere in the 3k range here in Canada. So you'll probably be saving somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-7k between a leftover 2012 with the 5.0, and an equally equipped 2013 with the 6.2L. Good luck!

If you like power more so than fuel economy, then you should make a choice based on the performance specification of the 5.0 and 6.2 engines. There are some signifcant differences.

If you like the power of the 6.2 but want the fuel economy of the 5.0 then I agree you should give some thought to the ecoboost.
If you have to have a V8 under the hood then just go and drive both.
The 5.0 has great power and an awesome sound, plus there is lots of after market potential out there for it. I've seen 9.5 L/100km (24mpg) on long freeway trips at 110 km/h. Granted this is level ground with the cruise control on and my truck is a 3.31 2wd. But normally I sit around 10.65 L/100km (22mpg) with mixed driving. I pull a 6500lb camper around with it a dozen times a year and the engine likes to run up the rev range a bit to get into its working torque curve but I don't mind, I enjoy listening to it work. I'll get around 18.1 L/100km (13 mpg) pulling that camper if I'm careful. All these fuel economy numbers are hand calculated. I really enjoy my 5.0.
I've never driven a 6.2 however I have ridden in one (Harley Davidson edition) and its a beast. Great pull and awesome sound but it does come at a price. The best I've ever read on this forum for that motor is 18 - 19 mpg on long road trips in near perfect driving conditions with 2wd models.
If you are truly undecided and not just trying to talk yourself out of the 6.2L for the added cost then I would seriously be considering grabbing a good deal on a 2012 5.0. But if you have your heart set on that 6.2 and can afford the additional costs then go for the 2013 because then you won't always be wondering "what if".
Just my 2 cents, good luck with your decision

As far as fuel economy goes, he doesn't really know what it is and it's not a concern for him. Must be nice to have that kind of disposable income, eh? I won't even guess what mileage would be like because like I said, it would only be speculation.
That said, I can attest to the efficiency of the 5.0. The very first tankful yielded 18.5 mpg average. Now consider this, the very first tank in a new truck:
1. All the short trips around town to show it off
2. Tickling the throttle to hear that awesome sound!
3. Idling while setting up all my radio stations and Sync set up
I think that's pretty awesome for an engine with 360hp/380lb/ft!
I bought it in April and it has around 2400kms on her, and she's on her third tank. The second tank yielded 19.7mpg average. Unreal. On a recent trip to Edmonton from Red Deer, I reset the fuel economy guage once I got on the highway. It settled out on 11.4 l/100kms for the whole trip. That's just under 25mpg! At 120 km/h!
I don't know what kind of driving you do, but I can say with conviction that you would not be unhappy with the 5.0!

I kind of investigated the 6.2 as if I went F250 it would have been that or the diesel. It is an oversquare iron block two valve per cylinder as best as I determined. The 5.0 is an aluminum block four valves per cylinder with stroke longer than bore diameter.
At least in the few top tier level F150 when the 6.2 engine is there they don't use the electric of sorts power steering and I guess have a pulley and belt off the rotation of the engine. There must be significantly more weight there wouldn't you think? How that effects the cargo capacity and the front vs rear weight distribution might be something to consider.

The EB has just 1% more power and a tad over 10% more torque over the 5.0. The 5.0 can run with it just fine.
As for the 6.2 .... yeah... different league.
Engine type 3.5L V6 EB 5.0L V8 6.2L V8
Horsepower 365 360 411
Torque 420 380 434

Honestly if it's even a question in your mind, go 6.2. No sense compromising the 6 months later saying "I wish I had bought the 6.2"
If you even think you may at some point need the extra grunt of the 6.2 might as well wait. If you don't, the 5.0 numbers are more than respectable.
