Considering a new purchase and was wondering what the thoughts are on the 5.0 vs. the 5.4 as there are still a lot of 2010's out there for some good deals. Wondering the thoughts from those who have exerperience with both as far as performance, driveablity, etc. Let me know your thoughts.

What a expert opinion from such an expert.

There is nothing wrong with the 5.4'as it has been a great motor for years. The 5.0 has also been around for a while. I believe it really depends on what you plan to use your truck for as well as what kind of deal you can get on the 2010. Both are good options.

Both are decent engines. The 5.0 is more of an evolutionary engine than revolutionary. The 5.4 is has been in use a long time, and the 5.0 has a long heritage behind it as well.

Can't go wrong either way.

I think its too early to tell how the 5.0 will be. It looks good on paper, but it hasnt been proven yet. The 5.4 has. Also, the 5.0 may have a long heritage.....but this is a far cry from the old 5.0 pushrod engines!! I think the 5.4 is a great engine.....but I wouldnt be afraid to try the 5.0

Your choice is between really good (5.4) and even supposed to be better (5.0). There is nothing wrong with either engine. The 5.0 is a little lighter and more fuel efficient. The 5.0 revs higher (which means nearly nothing in a truck).

Some parts of the 5.0 look like they were intended for a high RPM screamer and, well, they are. It is too early to know, but the 5.4 might have a better shot at making 300,000+ if you plan on keeping it that long.

Another part of the equation is the transmission. The 2011 6 speed has some improvements in both hardware and software which should result in it being smoother and ever so slightly more efficient.

The 2011 has the cool 4.2 inch trip computer on the dash, if you are into that sort of thing (I am )

The trade off is an extra bit of incentive money on the 2010, or another mile or two per gallon on the 5.0.

Considering that the 5.0 has been around for a year or so and the 5.4 design has been around almost 20; I'd say that that if the 5.0 wasn't an improvement then it would be ridiculous. That having been said; I have no issue with my 5.4 sure I'd like it to get better mileage but the 5.0 isn't some magical fuel mileage motor either. It's still in a 5000lb + vehicle with the aerodynamics of a house. I have decent enough power to get where I want to go with acceptible levels of performance. I have yet to worry if I can accelerate enough to pass or merge and I know that other than a couple of issues which have been addressed over time the 5.4 is proven.

The current 5.0 has no heritage other than its displacement its a new design so comparing it to the old 302 is sentimental at best. Much the same way comparing the Hemi to the older 426 is; neither one are anywhere close to being a descendant of the old motor. Not hating on the new motor just saying that calling the 5.4 a pos because its not the new kid on the block is silly. I'm sure it is/will be an excellent motor but I'd probably go EB before I'd go 5.0 in my next truck.

Exactly my thoughts when I decided on purchasing my 2010 FX4 at the end of 2010. I wanted a good reliable truck with a proven engine. I needed a new truck now and couldn't wait for a couple of years to see how the 5.0 would turn out. It possibly could be a better engine in the long run but for me the 5.4 fills my needs....

I have 5.0 in my old '94 but like 50Ford500 said, the new one is not the same design. So when I bought my new truck a month ago one reason I opted for 2010 vs 2011 was I wanted a proven motor. Being a Ford man, I have no doubt that the new 5.0 will be a good motor. It is a Ford.
