5.0 vs 5.4
#21
I'm getting 17.5 mpg with my 5.4 in a combo or rural and city driving. I can get close to 20 on the open highway. The key has been me keeping my foot out of it and watching the mileage as I drive. I got a great deal on my used '10 XLT mostly because it had the 5.4 in it.

I bought a 2010 F150Scab in Jan.11 and traded it in Oct.11.I pulled the trigger a little to quick with the first one.I have 2 kids 13 and 7 and found out quickly that I needed the extra space with a Screw. The 2010 had the 5.4 and mine now has the 5.0.The 5.0 definitely has more pep in it's step and avgs 1 to 2 gallons better than did the 5.4,but if this were my main reasons for trading I would have just kept the 5.4.I don't tow a lot but what I do tow the 5.4 handled like a champ. My wifes got a Navigator with the 5.4 and it's got a helofa pull on it.I think the engines are configured different but unsure(5.4 in truck vs Navigator I mean).

I have an 05 with the 5.4 and the parents have an 09 platinum and a 10 king ranch with the 5.4. I gotta say the 6 speed definitely helped it out but I think the 5.0 and EB are a lot better match for the 6sp as well. Personally I would take a 5.0 or EB but I have been around a 5.4 since its been out and its reliability has been great(both the 2valve and 3 valve tritons). Like every one else has said, time will tell with the new engines as far as reliability goes.

I should also say that this is a 2wd screw.

Ford Freak
My '09 FX4 gets 18 mpg on the highway with a level and 305/65/18.
My dad has my old '98 Expedition 5.4, it has over 230k miles and I've never had any troubles out of that engine.
Like I stated earlier, there are big differences in these engines, in the modular engine family you have 2 valve, 3 valve, and 4 valve heads. The 5.4 started out as a 2 valve, then moved up to 3 valve, and the Lincolns had the 4 valve. 2 valve and 3 valve are generally better for towing, while the 4 valve is rev happy and is great for exceleration.
The only reason Ford moved to the 5.0 was the retro craze, just like the hemi. they could have just done the same with the 5.4, but the 5.0 name has a reputation. The 5.4 is a beast in the Shelby Mustang and Ford GT supercar.
Putting four valves heads on modular engines and increasing the compression is no more new technology than the 5.4 is, Ford has been making better power in the SVT Cobras since '96 using most of the same tricks found in the 5.0, but applying them to the 4.6. And stroker kits to make a 4.6 a 5.0 have been out since the late '90's.
This is not new technology, it's been around a while you just haven't seen it in an F150.
Now the the Ecoboost is new technology for Ford, but not the 5.0.

Inebriated 4 ur safety
So you 5.0 guys got tired of fighting a losing battle with the 3.5 GTDi so you decided to compete with an engine you have a chance of winning against? (I know I am going to catch hell for that remark but I don't care. It was funny)
Having driven the 5.0 and 5.4 6 spd as work vehicles, I will say that the 5.4 is still a better towing engine the the 5.0 IMO. The more low end and overall torque in the 5.4 just made it a dependaible work horse that didn't have to shift as much as the 5.0 when towing. The 5.0 is faster and is a blast to drive unloaded over the 5.4 although it is not the same when loaded. Someone said earlier stating that the 5.0 has been out since the early 90's. Besides the 5.0 name, this new 4V TiVCT 5.0 shares absolutely nothing with the older ones. Not even their sizes are the same. The old 5.0 was 4942 cc(technically a 4.9), and the new engine is 4951 cc.

My buddy had the 5.4 6-speed. He drove my 5.0 and I drove his 5.4. The end result is he traded his 5.4 FX4 for a new 5.0 FX4 a week later to keep up with me. As just one example, BOSS5.0 on here has clocked over 10K miles and ran a dozen or so bottles doing 150 nitorus holeshots. He's running Mickey Thompson drag radials will a flat 1.60 60' time and 11.83 1/4-mile.
I know it's not 200,000+ miles, but, under normal driving conditions, I'd say this is a great indicator the 5.0 will last a long, long time. He's had no issues out of the driveline at all. There are plenty of other examples, but, this is just one that I know of.
And if there's any doubt, his video and timeslips are posted on this forum.
