Default 5.0 v8 or ecoboost?

I have a 2006 5.4 and get at most 13mpg. I don't pull anything that often but wondering the difference in mpg 5.0 v8 or ecoboost?. Both trucks are fx4. Is it worth the extra $ for the eb?

I just got my '12 fx4 ecoboost just over a week ago. I love it. It's probably a personal prefence thing. I would drive both and see which you like more.

Go drive both and then make a decision. I wanted mine for towing my boat and liked the fact it was new technology meant to improve mileage while not suffering performance. So far with over 10,000 miles on it I'm extremely impressed with it. I drive mainly in town and tow the boat a lot so my mileage is not going to sell you on it. The first time you pull out on a highway and need to get up to speed pulling 4500 pounds or more you'll be extremely impressed with the torque of the twin turbo Ecoboost! Again though you need to test drive and make you choice based on what you want, they're both great engines.

I have FX4 screw 5.0 3.73 and my mpg ranges from high 16 to mid 17. I drive half city half highway and all highway is around 21.

I originally wanted a ecoboost but when I test drove it I just wanted to floor it and feel the power and hear the turbo, where as the 5.0 I didn't get that feeling as much. I travel frequently and read that 5.0 get about the same mpg as a eco, so with me not having that feeling of wanting to hear the turbo and feel the power I decided on the 5.0. I'm happy with the mpg I'm getting and only wish I would have gotten the eco when I was looking at getting a camper.

I had a 2011 f150 ecoboost and had some issues with it losing power periodiaclly when i would go to pass. apparently this is not uncommon in some ecoboosts's. Ford engineers are aware of it but seem slow to correct it. after being in the shop for like 5 times i got sick of the hassle, so i traded it off for a 2012 f150 5.0. I liked to immediate torque of the ecoboost and i gotta admit the whine of the turbo's are addicting. As far as fule mileag goes, i get around 1 to 1,5 less MPG with the 5.0 while not towing. when i do tow my trailer, i get the same, maybe even a little better with the 5.0. The ecoboost is a great motor but there seems to be some issues with some of them so be careful. This is not one of those things that you can recreate for the servie dept it happens when it happens. If you google ecoboost power loss you will see a lot of people having the same issue. I am content and happy with the 5.0, its strong, sounds great and purrs until you mash it and then it growls, like a v8 should. So you have a tough decision to make, good luck.

cant go wrong with either one, 5.0 will be cheaper and if you drive i right will get good mpgs too. i have the eco and i love it. this tank i am getting 18.5 mgs mixed, prob 60% hwy / 40% city. the power delivery is awesome. it never down shifts when driving highways at 75+ mph. i wouldnt trade my truck for anything.

good luck, you will like either one

I really like the power/turbo feel of the Ecoboost, but don't think the gas mileage is THAT much better than the 5.0.

I drove all three engines (5.0 V8; 6.2 V8 and Ecoboost). The Ecoboost was very quick/powerful and somewhere in the middle of both engines, if not closer to the 6.2.

I really enjoy the turbo feel and wanted the extra power while getting similar (arguably better) gas mileage than the 5.0.

My .02c

If you want a tow rig/quite riding truck-Ecoboost
If you want a loud V8 sounding street truck- 5.0 Coyote

I have a Ecoboost and love it. But I really do miss the V8 Growl
