5.0 knocking at idle, becoming louder/worse...

I'm not sure how long it has been making the noise as I am the second owner (purchased the vehicle March 2016 with 67,xxx miles). I have no complaints, has always performed great (with the exception of a bad coil which has since been replaced).

Gonna guess you have a slightly loose wrist pin/piston fit and if so it will run for a long time. Just a PITA, eventually the wrist pin will do some bad things/score the cylinder wall, break a rod when it looses lubrication, that sort of bad thing..

If anything just run the slightly thicker 5w-30 as he has already done but you really shouldn't even have to.

I was in this exact situation with my 2011 5.0.
My advice? Make a proactive decision, make the time to deal with this and take it to every possible local Ford dealer and press them about it.If they all still say it's normal atleast it's WELL documented and you still have a leg to stand on if it fails outside of warranty,or,trade it.
Me myself, despite the fact that every Ford dealer told me mine was normal and I had it WELL documented should anything happen outside of warranty,I still just couldn't fathom the fact that I paid a lot of money for a truck that knocked,I didn't want a engine that knocked and I didn't want a replacement engine either because chances of it being the same after the engine replacement is hit or miss a lot of the times so instead I traded mine in.Couldnt be happier.

Beer Gut Extraordinaire
My 5.0 had the well-documented cold knock at idle and it began to lose compression within a few thousand miles.

Mine sounds great when cold, slight subtle knock at idle (sometimes) when at running temperature. Not real worried about it, I might try 5w30 next oil change, 5w40 after that....

Same with mine, I'm probably fussing over nothing. I just tried royal purple 5w30 and noticed a difference.
