5.0 knocking at idle, becoming louder/worse...
Hello All,
I have a 2012 FX4 SCAB with the 5.0L, just hit 80,000 miles last week. I've noticed that it seems to be knocking quite a bit at idle. I had the knocking noise checked out at the dealership a few months back when I firsted noticed it and they reported that it nothing sounded out of place. Now it seems to be louder, especially on cold starts. I know some of the earlier 5.0L blocks had machining issues (some oblong cylinder shapes). I don't want to think short block replacement, but I am becoming more concerned with the noise. I will be taking the truck to another dealer to have the noise diagnosed. Any suggestions or thoughts? I don't want to be brushed aside once again, and told that the truck "sounds like a normal 5.0L". I've seen videos of the 5.0L knock on youtube, and seems more often than not that most people end up getting the block replaced.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One suggestion is to ask them if they can disconnect coil packs and try to see if the knocking goes away when one specific one is disconnected. Then at least maybe they can isolate it to one cylinder which would probably point to an oblong cylinder as you stated.

I will have them diagnose the issue on my next oil change (which will be in a few days). I had a random misfire on cylinder 7 a few months back, so I changed that coil. Perhaps there is another bad coil somewhere.

just noticed the same thing from mine at 55k miles. Part of me wants to take it in before 60k, but part of me knows they're just going to say it's normal.
from what I can gather, it's never caused anybody real issues aside from noise.

That seems to (hopefully) be the case. There is a user who just posted last week that he bought his 285k mI 5.0 from his employer and that it has the knock and runs like a champ
