Default 5.0 Gas Mileage

Hi All.

I just bought a 2012 FX4 with a 5.0. I'm surprised about the gas mileage, from some research I found average highway mpg to be between 17-20 for most drivers. I just came back from a 100 mile trip with cruise set at 70mph most of the drive, and the computer is showing average of 13.4mpg. This was all highway mileage, no gunning it just cruising.

The truck has 70k mile on it and is all stock, could it be time for new plugs / fuel filter / ect? Maybe run some fuel injector cleaner through the tank?

Also ,what are most of you using for oil in the 5.0 motors? Unfortunately my tuck came without an owners manual. Thanks in advance.

5-20 synthetic blend or or 5-20 full synthetic is what is called for by Ford. Your MPG seems askew like E-85 mileage.

Basically the main m.p.g. screen is your lifetime average or at least since you have reset it anyway. Next time you would like to check reset one of the trip computers, will give you a more accurate reading vs. the lifetime average or just calculate it yourself the old fashioned way. Just got back home from a 350 mile trip yesterday...avg. was 18.9 m.p.g. running mainly at 70 sometimes at 75. Blew me away, my lifetime average is 15.9 (on the main mpg screen).

Totally stock, 52k with original plugs. I've switched over to Pennzoil Platinium 5w20. At 70k you aren't too far away from a plug change, wouldn't hurt anything.

Fortunately, all manuals are online also. See link in my sig.

Mileage threads daily. Next time you do a 100 mile highway drive, reset, then drive 25 miles at 70. Reset, then drive 25 miles at 65, then reset and do it at 60 and again at 55. You will see a marked improvement when you drop to 65 or below.

Oil info already answered.

80km/h is the sweet spot for my truck (50mph) my best mileage was 9.2L/100 (30mpg)

Completely stock SCrew 5.0 plus a Raptor exhaust.

I drive mostly city, but when tested on the highway only, I have 19.3 Pulling 3,800# of cargo and small enclosed trailer at 75MPH, 21.1 pulling the same at 68 MPH, and 25.5 at 65-70 MPH with no trailer. I have a RCSB 2wd with 3.55's. these figures were achieved running 87 octane E10 fuel. Only change from stock is a camper top & synthetic oil. I'd be baffled at anything less than 18 empty.

I get 14-15 mixed driving (mostly city). My lifetime (11k) is right at 16mpg. I can get mid 20's cruising at 65 though. Once I bump it to 70-75 I lose about 5 mpg.

'14 5.0 screw with larger wheels/tires (see sig) I average about 15 with a lot of city driving. Speed and wind play a huge factor in my mileage. Under 65mph I can see 18mpg. Kick it up to 75+mph, I'm down to 14-15mpg.

FWIW, I was 1-1.5mpg higher with the stock tires/wheels.

What was the difference in tire size (original height vs new height)?
