got mule?
Stopped by to pick up a loaner vehicle today and got to speak to the writer and tech. Ford approved a short block replacement and is considering a long block as there may be head damage. This is the 2nd early 2012 they have had the same issue with.

My Truck is sitting at the dealership right now for the same reason. They started tearing it down yesterday and will not have a loaner vehicle available until sometime tomorrow. As of right now I dont know where they are at in the process but they were pulling the valve cover and the oil pan yesterday. I will gather that it will end up needing at least the short block.

OK. Here's the knocking video of my RAM when I had it.
This started at 1,000 miles. They first tore the engine apart, and said that they brought in a machine shop, who measured the cylinders and pistons. They said that the measurements on each was within tolerance, but one on the high side, and one on the low side. Meaning the cylinder was on the high side of the tolerance, and the piston was on the low side. They said this was causing the knocking. They said they saw "damage" on the cylinder wall, etc, etc, etc, but they reused the block anyway. They replaced the piston, rod (they reused the bearings), noise went away for 1,000 miles and came back. They replaced the block with a short block, noise went away for 1,000 miles, then came back. I could hear this noise on most of the HEMI's that were brand new on the lot (but very very faint). I went to arbitration, and they bought back the truck.
As well... I just searched youtube for "5.0 engine knock", and found a lot of people with 5.0L's with the exact same knock. The issue with something so common, is that when you get a new short block, there's a good chance of the noise coming back. Now you have the same noise, and a rebuilt engine, in your brand new truck. There's just something weird about 2 different engine brands having the exact same noise. There's something in these engines causing this noise, and it's tricking dealers into thinking it's an engine failure, when in fact it's something else. I think these engines are made fairly "loose" abide by these strict MPG standards.

Hi, I had the same issue, I pushed my dealer as they said it was normal, mine is a 2012 5.0 with then 30k, they had it overnight as it was always worse when cold, they talked to ford technical & the issue is a loose cylinder liner, ford replaced by bottom end under warranty, I tried for the whole engine but no joy.. This was last jan, then they had only heard of 5 cases I'm guess now there's a few more.. Truck now has 55k no issues with engine just wind noise.
Hope this helps

As of Friday January 23rd, about 2 hours after I picked up my loaner car from the dealer, the service writer called to notify me that the inspection did not get past cylinder #1, the knocking was coming from the 3-4 area. They have ordered a complete new engine assembly. It is a 2012 with 45,060 miles on the odo. Build date of 01/05/2012.

Soooooo glad I'm getting mine documented now. First dealer said they could hear it but didn't have another truck to compare it to, so they just noted it in my Oasis. Went back for a TSB and also to get the knock checked again, and they changed their story and said they couldn't hear anything. So tomorrow I have an appointment at another dealer.
