My truck was kept for 3 days and they heard the noise at times with me and still say they think mine is fine. The shop foreman started another 5.0 and it didn't make a sound, it was a customers probably a 13 or 14 model. I feel confident my noise is in number 3 cylinder and soon will be back in for a oil change and to check this out again.

The Ford tech Makuloco that does the youtube video time elapse shortblock replacement says that most will pass a compression test fine. I have a mechanics stethoscope and heard it louder in number 3 while the rest were normal, so taking that with me and setting it up ahead of time before the oil change.

Iv been down this road with my beautiful black 2011 5.0 V8 XTR 4x4 super crew, along side of burning some oil between oil changes. Its pretty well known 2011-early 2013 5.0 V8s were the effected engines and Ford fixed the problem/mid 2013-2014 5.0 V8s and beyond are trouble free.
Over the course of about a year mine visited Ford dealers 3 times ("Normal operating/sounding 5.0 V8") was the answer I was given all 3 times. Its said to not be detrimental to the engine and I believe it,seeing how there's a member on here who recently said his 285,000 mile 5.0 V8 has knocked since day 1 and is still running strong and I have yet to here of even 1 5.0 V8 grenade itself.
In the end for me I knew weather mine got a new engine or not,I would not be happy/and would be trading it regardless giving the price of these trucks. Most times it seems once a engine replacement is done, the vehicle is never the same (drives differently, loose nuts/bolts that were missed, leaks etc),goes for any vehicle/brand (they are only original once). And I was also not going to live with a engine that knocked, detrimental or not.So i knew I would not be happy unless I had a new/different truck altogether.
The whole concern seemed like it was taking over my life, many sleepless nights just thinking about it.Everyday it was like reading a book that never ended,or every day putting on the same movie over and over again but never getting to the end.

In the end I made the proactive decision and traded that black 2011 5.0 V8 XTR 4x4 super crew in on a new even more beautiful (and more expensive) black 2014 5.0 V8 Platinum 4x4 super crew. Before the trade I did a few test drives ofcourse with the 5.0 V8 Platinum and the dealer even let me take the truck home over night and I confirmed the 5.0 V8 Platinum burns 0 oil and is whisper quiet at all operating conditions,so did the trade and couldn't be happier and that's how the never ending book/movie happily ended.
IMHO,if you truly would be happy with a engine replacement, push the dealer hard, but if it's evident the dealer still isn't budging, save yourself the time and BS and trade it.These trucks cost way too much money and life is way too short to be not happy with them/deal with them knocking.Instead of kicking the problem further down the road just trade it and move on happily.

That's been 1 theory of the 2011-early 2013 5.0 V8 knocks (cylinder sleeves loose,2nd being oblong cylinders).

You wouldn't happen to know when in 2013 these were "fixed/changed" would you? My truck was made in May of 2013, and sometimes, I think I hear something, but other times, it's whisper quiet and I write the other times off as being "Paranoid about everything because I love my truck too effing much for something to be wrong...."

I'm not 100% sure. Most guys will say this is a 2011-2012 problem only (and that has been 90%+ of them knocking) but there have been the odd 1-2 early 2013 builds that have been reported of knocking (2013 early "year truck",but the engine probably made in late 2012)

Usually when they knock, they are more evident than not.If yours was really knocking, you would know it.Best way to find out is bring the truck to operating temps,in a secluded quiet place with no other distracted noises (cars/traffic going by etc) and listen real close around the passenger side front wheel well.

I have a 2013 F150 5.0 with 75000 miles on it. Had number 8 cylinder lose compression and it was caused by a valve that didn't seat correctly. Had the extended service plan and ford replaced the head. Got it back and two days later back in the shop because it had hesitation on acceleration. Wound up being a bad replacement head. Head was replaced again and that issue was resolved. Now I hear a tapping or knocking sound on startup which goes away after the engine throttles down. Took it in to dealership for an oil change, check for an oil leak and to investigate noise. Oil leak was oil pan gasket and service tech says they hear the sound but no answer to what it is. Oil pan gasket was replaced. Service tech says it sounds like when you change oil and start up afterward. Has that low oil knock but oil pressure is normal. The warranty people will not let them tear into it without it being worse or a motor failure.

Definitely have to follow this advice, thats what we did and they heard it. trade is a option, but I already have done so much to this truck with mods that I really want to keep it. Something to consider but payoff is around the corner this year.
