It's definitely coming from the RH bank - typically cylinders 3 & 4. The knock does, however, disappear after the engine is up to operating temp. Typical of piston slap. I literally just paid the truck off last week and this is my reward. I spoke to one local San Diego area dealer about "new" short block and "re-manufactured" short block. He said if the mileage is under 12k miles, then a new short block would be installed. Yea, I am under 12k miles, but just outside the 36 months. My biggest concern is the quality of the work on an engine R&R. As a tech many years ago, I know what can happen if attention to detail is not a priority. Fix the block and end up with a multitude of other issues. The tech that I would really trust is Brian, the YouTube ford guy that called his channel "fordtechmakuloco." But that ain't gonna happen as he is in Chicago - a long way from SoCal. Here's a couple of videos of my 5.0 on a cold start with the knock, and another after its up to temp. Sounds like two different engines.

I'll keep you all updated on how things go with the dealer.
Thanks to all who have come forward to get the word out on this 5.0 knock. Ford really needs to get the block/cylinder distortion issues corrected. My $42,000 truck is by far the worst ever, and believe me, I've had a lot of trucks in my day. Never have I had so many issues, plus an engine replacement! Good grief! Shame on Ford for pushing out a motor that has not been "real world" tested. Ford: update that 5.0 block and get 'er done once and for all. Wish I would have gone with the 6.2L.

Your knock sounds just like mine does right after an oil change. Thats what mine sounded like the whole way up the mountain, when I was hoping a piston would just shatter. Id like to hear yours after more miles on the oil and see if it quiets down at all.
Im new to ford and came from a 2011 Tundra CrewMax 4X4 just because I had some money to spend was bored with the looks of the Tundra and always like the looks of the F150 better. Huge mistake.!! My Tundra had around 37K on it when I traded it and not one issue, the 5.7 engine always sounded great and consistent no oil consumption at all either. Major regret!
Pretty sure this will be my last Ford truck. Mine is paid off as well so Im keeping my eyes open.

As for your comment about the short blocks being new or reman, I was told by a service dept I had called once, I dont remember where that the short blocks are not reman's, when a block comes back to ford its recycled not reman'd. as far as I can imagine a block would only come back to ford because of cylinder issues and I cant imagine they would just send it back out into the pool.
Not sure if its 100 true but that is what I heard.
Good luck with yours and let me know how it goes

Default oil

Just a FYI: I switched to synthetic (another expense) to see if that would help. Still knocks.

Sooo FORD, seems you have a block issue. What are you going to do about this?

My MPG is terrible, even with the cat back exhaust and Roush air intake, I am lucky to see 15 mpg hwy. So much for all the specifications they post. Saw one that claimed 26mpg posted on the trucks windshield at a dealership.! LMAO. How do they get away with this also?
Maybe if we had tight blocks and pistons that didn't slap and injectors that didn't click and tick we might get the right MPG? The more I read all these (20 pages!!) the more upset I get. Maybe all the Ford Haters are right after all.

Does anyone know what it would cost for me to exchange the block with a decent one on my dime? No way I can sell it like this.

For a new vehicle this is

If you're out of warranty, I would just run it till she blows. If it's in warranty, fight the good fight. Roughly an engine job is upward to 5 grand. That's what my invoice from the dealership said for the short block replacement. It was Fords cost keep in mind. It's usually cheaper to get a low mileage engine with a warranty from a reputable shop and let them swap it. Me personally, if it were under warranty, I'd escalate the issue even if it meant litigation.

I'll let you know. Don't really understand a knock showing up after an oil change?? Guys on some Mustang forums are saying the same thing. I did switch from Motorcraft 5w-20 syn-blend to Mobil 1 full syn. 5w-20 on my most recent oil change. Always use Motorcraft oil filters. At this point in time, mine does sound fine AFTER it's up to a normal operating temp (2nd video). I may dump the Mobil 1 and switch back to Motorcraft syn-blend just to see what happens. Never know. Doesn't make sense, but worth a try.

To all those with 5.0 knocks. Check your policy for theft and vandalism. Drive it to Baltimore and leave it parked for as few days.

Changed the oil AGAIN after only 100 miles on the Mobil 1. Wanted to inspect clean low mileage oil for shiny metal shavings; there were none...yet. Warmed it up at idle and it knocked for 15 minutes. Took a couple more videos. Also used my mechanics stethoscope and found very noisy roller rockers on cylinder 8; this is in addition to the knock coming from either cylinder 3 or 4. Refilled with Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 and another new Motorcraft filter. Still knocks. I'm very upset that my newly paid off truck is in this condition with only 9,500 miles on it! What a nightmare. Wish I'd never seen this Ford F-150! The knock ruins my day too!!

Anyone else on here interested in getting together and filing something formal about this with Ford?
