If you don't do any heavy towing or hauling and are mostly concerned with fuel mileage, you may want to consider a 3.15:1 or 3.31:1 ratio with an Ecoboost.

^Trying to turn an F150 into a Prius is a losing proposition.

Changing to 3.15s or 3.31s is going to gain you nothing in town and maybe 2mpg on the highway. In the process it is going to kill tow/haul power leaving you with something that sucks as a truck, and still does not get the mileage of a car.

3.15...? Really?

Maybe if he doesn't tow or haul anything he doesn't need a truck to start with.

Had the 3.31s in my eco, and drove a buddies eco with the 3.73. From now on, I'll always be getting the best performance rear end. The mileage is so minimal but the performance is noticeable. In short, get the 3.73 if you can.

When I build&price mine, I chose SuperCrew with 6.5' bed. I can't imagine someone wanting a shorter bed in a pickup, but my dealer told me that most SuperCrews are the shorty. Lots of city dudes buying pickups these days, I guess. Us old farm boys prefer the "regular" 8' bed, but that's not available in a SuperCrew.

Lol I'm a country boy with a 5.5 bed. I have a truck with an 8' bed too but I find with a half ton you can only load them up so much for weight reasons anyways I didn't need the 8 foot with my new truck. I do wish I had the 6.5 though so I could shut the gate with my quad in the back

I have a 6.5" bed and can't close the gate with either one of my quads in it... it's close, but not close enough.

I have the 3.15 in an EcoBoost, and it tows my 5,000-pound TT just fine. Around labor day we towed the TT 4,000 miles, from west Texas to Knoxville TN to Detroit MI, then crossed the river into Ontario, then to Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in northwest lower MI, then home via Chicago and St. Louis and OK City.

So towing ability of the EcoBoost engine and 3.15 (4x2) or 3.31 (4x4) axle is not a problem with a trailer that weighs up to about 7,000 pounds. (Tow rating is 8,400 pounds, but that's a bit exaggerated, so I'll stand by the 7,000 pound number.)

However, payload is a problem. My GVWR is 7,100, and my GVW was 7,200 on that trip. I needed the max tow pkg with 7,700 pounds GVWR to stay away from overloaded country with both the trailer and the topper. With 20/20 hindsight, I'd order the 3.73 E-Locker diff which gets you the max tow pkg and 7,700 GVWR.
