There was an article a while back and it stated the author put 30+ gallons in a 26 Gal tank, I think the guy was an idiot and didn't know what options the truck he was testing had.
Anyhow. I only put gas in til she clicks once and then up to the nearest buck or 50 cent.

I have the 36 gallon tank and when it clicks that's it. I've tried to top it off but even a half gallon and it starts coming out the overflow tube so I dknt do it anymore. I've been as low as 30 miles to empty and most I got in was 34 gallons.

Exactly. It typically burps fuel down the side of the truck and out onto the tarmack. Generally not a good idea.

Tank is bigger than 26 gallons. Extra space for expansion. Filled over 26 gallons several times over last 4 years. Maybe 5 times. Have drove on E until dash was below 10 miles to empty.

How is topping off bad?

Ah maybe these newer ford's don't have it but the older GMC had evap solenoids that would get broken if you topped off the tank too much. These Fords it seem the fuel will dump on the ground instead. I don't know I swore it said in the manual not to top off but can't find it.

It actually says right on the fuel door "do not top off"
I've actually put 25.95 gallons. And I had 2 miles until empty. The needle was already in the lowest it could go. The reason I let it go that far was because. I was n the middle of nowhere and that was the only gas station.

Says do not top off on most gas pumps as well. Don't know if any things changed since 2004 but I remember them telling us topping off can cause check engine light because the excess fuel would not allow the pressure sensor to operate properly setting an emission failure code.
I always pull the nozzle out on first click, anything more and it spills out. I usually refill at 1/4 tank.
