Default 2010

so i just recently bought a 2010 f-150 xlt 4x4 with 77k miles on it. i have orders to Alaska but that will be thread. this one is about Gas mileage. i know you im new to this and i havent read any other forums yet. but im looking to improve what little gas mileage i get. it seems after a week of owning the truck and making a trip to San Antonio by the time i got back home it said i was averaging 14.8 a gallon at 75mph is the average speed. since i filled up yesterday and making my short trip back and forth on base backs down to 12.8 per gallon.

so beside drivng like Miss Daisy which i have been doing mostly. what can i do to improve my mileage i thought about doing a turn up new plugs and wires. and going back with some E3 spark plugs. there seems to be missed thoughts and feedback about these spark plugs. also thoughts about replacing the intake at least with some that should work better, have no clue on programmers or exhaust right now.

thoughts, comments, and input guys

thanks -Royder

The easiest way to get better MPG is to change the way you drive. Things like using cruise control as much as possible and drive like you don't have brakes. Take your foot off the gas when you can see up ahead you need to slow down. More speed isn't great but no one in Texas worries about that. In fact, I didn't know anyone in Texas worried about MPG. Brakes eat up more gas than anything else on your truck.

I was in Houston for a week a couple of years ago and saw my all time favorite bumper sticker: "Stop Continental Drift!" I assume it was a slam on people thinking we will stop global climate change somehow.

i dont have a tuner i was wondering if anyone has any results from using them.

I do have some 4x4 question though. ive never owned a 4x4 nor really worked on them. but i need to know signs of binding up in a 4x4 system. i hoped in my truck switched it to 4x4 and pulled out of my parking spot and heard the tires chirping like a i had a spoon differential. i did this bc i dont know the last time it had been driven in 4x4 and i felt like doing a simple short drive in would keep all the parts lube and all that great stuff. after a short bit i noticed when turning the left the chirping sound went away. but i noticed when i turn to the right it seem like it just binds up and you dont have any turning radius at all before it starts to really bog down. and then finally i get back to my place i start to back up into the parking spot and literally my truck just wont reverse anymore. i have to put it back in 4x2 and pull forward and drive around the complex then come back and back in again. now though, this is problem just my mind messing with me but it sounds like there is a rotational noise. ugh FML...

Well I will tell you you should never have your truck in 4x4 on dry pavement. It really binds up the drivetrain. Hopefully you didn't break anything.

It shouldn't matter where I drive it. If the gears in the differential are the same size and my tires are the same size then there should be no binding.

Every truck I've ever owned operates that way in 4x4 when doing a tight turn, like into a parking spot. And it does matter if you are on dry pavement. It's all in the manual. 4x4 is not the same as all wheel drive. In all wheel drive, the system compensates for the outer wheel that is turning at a different speed than the inner wheel. 4x4 does not, your front wheels will turn at the same speed.
