Default 2013 F-150 FX4 5.0 First Oil Change....Thoughts

So I did my first oil change on my truck at 7500 miles today. I thought it would be a little easier than my old 2010 F-150 regular cab, since the FX4 sits little bit higher.

For one, the skid plate makes for a bigger mess when the oil is draining from both the filter and drain plug. Maybe next time, I'll make something that channels the oil away from the skid plate on both ends. And two, the dipstick is a PITA to get to. I'm surprised Ford didn't extend the handle to where you can grab it from over the fender (comfortably). I had to get a step ladder (and I'm 5'10") to get a hold of it. And finally, what a pain to fill the engine with oil. Wasn't there an extension that we (5.0 V8 owners) could add to the valve cover to avoid this issue?

Anyway, just my .02........

I just did my own oil change today. I used ramps since I can't squeeze under to do the change. I like room to work. My skid plate has strategically located holes so all oil drips clear through. Good thing I threw down a drop cloth.

Bummer about the fill hole on the valve cover. My 5.4 has a pretty tall spout for pouring in oil.

The so called Engineers, should have to do a oil change on these trucks.... To see what a PITA it can be, especially the retarded oil filter drip tray mess!

I remove the skid plate every oil change. It's a pain, but I dont want an oily mess dripping from the skid plate.

Changed mine at 1,000 miles to fully synthetic Mobil 1. I agree, the skid plate is dumb and when I saw the dipstick I literally said, "What the f*ck, Ford?". Terrible design.

Yeah, I went with Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W-20 motor oil with a Motorcraft FL-500S oil filter. At first, I bought a Motorcraft FL400S, but realized it was the wrong P/N. When I bought the FL-500S, I put them side by side. No difference at all.

After the oil change, I went to the car wash to hose off the engine bay. Looks good as new.

2013 5.0 comes from the factory with full synthetic, look in the owners manual.
