Got truck back today. It was in for a full week and a day. The transmission was disassembled, checked out, and reassembled. The tech said a check valve type vent part was removed....as suggested by another tech online who worked on a similar problem. Supposedly this valve was causing pressure to build up inside the trans and cause fluid flow problems. Remember...this truck uses no dipstick so natural venting isn't there anymore. Seems to drive well....shifts better than it ever has. Hasn't failed to engage...yet. So we will see.
Off to the purchasing dealer next week to replace the passenger side catalytic converter. It's rattling like a buzz saw.
I'll report back how it goes from here. I definately wanna follow up on my symptoms, the work performed, and what ultimately fixed it if that's the case.

Hey 3Speed,
Congratulations on finally getting your truck fixed and it was great that Ashley from Ford was able to help too! Thank you for keeping us updated! Now hopefully after getting your catalytic converter rattle fixed you can finally move forward and actually enjoy your truck!

I had PM communications with Ashley and I decided I'd wait to see how dealer #2 did with this transmission. My post yesterday was based on a 20 mile drive from the dealer back to work...in which all seemed ok. Of course it had been driven by the dealer that morning after sitting all night (which isn't when the problem is most noticable, and I warned them of that). Nonetheless...after it sat for four hours at work and I got in to leave...bingo. Failure to engage in reverse again. And a second time later that evening. There is a fundamental problem somewhere and the laptops aren't going to find it. And the valve body has been removed 3 or 4 times now with all known fixes attempted.
It still shifts hard too frequently as well. I believe the transfer case or rear axle has too much play in them which amplifies the transmission issues. But no dealer has checked those items to my knowledge although I've mentioned it. Lots of clanking and clunking under there. If every F150 was like mine...there is no way it'd be #1 in sales much longer. Nobody would put up with a 2013 vehicle that drives like a 200K mile beat up chevy pickup.
Furthermore...I've now got an additional new issue. At 35-40mph, fully warmed up...the downshift from 5th to 3rd (as if accelerating in traffic some) produces a low pitch sound for about a second. Sounds like a big rig semi brake that's bad and grinding on a drum. We've all heard that sound next to a semi probably. It's not really a grind or a squeal...but more like something rubbing loudly. Produces a slight vibration too. I've never heard this before.
Both dealers have been good to work with and both used their best known techs to service it. But it's just not working out.
I'll contact Ashley and see what the next step is. In my opinion the dealers are out of ideas of what to do. They keep looking inside the transmission which is logical. I just hope it's not something external like a PCM or ECM issue showing up in the trans...and a new trans gets installed only to still have a problem.
We will see.

Dang! I'm sure it's frustrating for everyone involved trying to solve this. I hope you get taken care of one way or another soon. It sounds like you have incredibly patient with this process which helps.

Ford F-150 Trany Failures and Electronics
Strangely enough, a tow truck operator was in my driveway tonight fixing a wheel on a friend's jag. I told him about the F-150 I was about to take receipt of (its still three weeks out).
He asked if it was 2 wheel drive or 4x4. I replied that it was the the latter.
He rolled his eyes and said 'I see LOT of problem F150's in 4x4 rig, a lot. Transmission problems that are due to electronic and wiring harness issues."
So tonight I am here looking for discussions on the issue and this thread pops up.
Take that as you may.

I've been patient and kept my cool. To no avail. It didn't matter. This truck transmission is JUNK JUNK JUNK afterall. I hear they are going on to 8 and 9 speeds now. I suggest they go back to C4's. Those worked 100 times better than my SIX speed that shifts like a 8LL Fuller manual driven by a 5 year old.
Well I'm sorry to report that Ford Motor Company really let me down. As did the second dealer I took it too. I was led to believe that they understood and saw the problem. That everything and anything would be done to correct the issue....including the discussion of a "buy back". Instead I was lied to and left to borrow vehicles and catch rides to work for a few day long stints...a week long stint...and finally a three week stretch they had my truck. Which I might add VERY little was actually done while my truck sat and sat and sat. I know this for a fact. This was after I was PROMISED by the CSM and the DEALER that they'd get me a rental replacement. Never happened. There's alot they said to me and led me to believe I was going to get the transmission fixed.
In the end...I was told there was nothing left to do they "hadn't already done". And that in fact the way my transmission operates is quite normal. Funny they had my truck more than 30 days worth of time to fix something NORMAL.
And to top it off...I was told by a customer service rep that "engineering" said it was normal operation, was caused by the way I'm driving it (lol...ya) and that part of the cause is due to the fact I drive it to work and park it. Thats what causes the situation to come about...from parking it. I guess I'm supposed to drive it non-stop and gas up on the fly, and never go to work anymore.
The dealer said drive it until something breaks and then they can fix it. Yet I'm told its totally normal and quite fine.
Yesterday I get in the truck and start it. Turn on the radio. Place in drive and let off the brake. It's moving forward so I think its fine. But that was becasue I was on a grade. I roll slowly about 100' with no throttle applied. When its time to speed up I gas it. But the engine free revs...and then SLAMS into gear like a sledge hitting you in the seat. Normal. Fine. No problem. It's the way I'm driving it.
I guess this is the end of this thread. No fix. I'm going to start another thread detailing all that happened to me in this terrible experience with Ford Motor Company. If you have a problem...and they cant detect anything on a laptop in 5 minutes...then you don't have a problem. Thats the new way.
And the only purpose of a customer service rep calling you and giving you a long number is so they can call you to tell you what the dealer already told you, to tell you they aren't technical people, that the call is recorded for training purpose...and to tell you what engineering told them to tell you and that you can't actually talk to anybody who knows anything technical no way, no how. Have a good day, we consider this case closed.
I didn't need a customer service rep who never gave me an email or number to get ahold of them. And when you call the regular number you can ask for the person by name...but you'll just get sent somewhere else and be told they'll call you back. A week later.
None of this is a lie or exaggeration. It's all fact. Matter of fact. I don't want a buyback. I don't want a lemon law. I just want this paid for truck to shift properly.
If all new Ford F150's acted like this one....they'd be #5 or #6 is sales. Nobody'd want them.
I'm DONE with Fords. The last new F150 I bought was a 1997. A Triton V8 5speed manual. Couldn't go from 1st to 2nd without hanging up and catching in neutral. They wouldn't fix it. So it was traded on a GMC. Now 2013 I figure I can go back to Fords. But this is what happens. So it's over.
Between GM, Dodge, Toyota and Nissan...I'm sure I can find something that will get me from age 39 to old age without this kind of rediculousness.
Sorry for ranting...but I actually have some reasons to rant here.
