Default 2012 Fx4

Thinking about buying a black 2012 FX4 - crew cab, all leather, 4x4 - 81k miles. Nice truck but what are things I should look for? It's a 5.0 - 6sp tranny.

Thanks for any info!

Engine knocking and or ticking, front passenger side usually.
Other than that and some anecdotal stories of woe, ifn you're buying the 5.0l she's gunna be pretty rock solid for you.
81k is nothing and the tranny's seem to be bulletproof.
If you buy her, you're gunna enjoy her.

I looked it over today. Noticed front pinion seal leaking. Not sure if that is common. Also heard the clunking when quickly moving the steering wheel back and forth - rack I read on some forums?

What do you think?

I don't like that seal leak.
That clunk could be a number of things from the rack to the U joint where the coulmn meets the rack....was there a lot of rust under the chassis?

The pinion seal is pretty common mine had it and I've changed out the pinion seal on about 4 of my fronds F-150s (all different years and trims) not to had a job espically after the first one. Just gotta be sure u set the back lash exactly where it was. Was able to do this tinple by measuring and marking the nut position

Test drive it make sure the trans shifts right. See if it makes a grinding noise when shifting from 4th to 5th and downshift from 6th to 4th. I know it sounds dumb. Also check the 4x4 and make sure the iwe actuators are good

No rust. It's looks good under neath. It is a one owner and he took to ford for all work done apparently.

I drove it and didn't hear or feel any oddities with tranny. I can check again.

I have the same truck with 56K miles. No noises, no grinding, no engine tick, no strange tranny shifts, had a "T" connector coolant hose leak but that was the only issue ever. I tow over 6K lb camper with mine...no problems.

Have you ever tried to move the steering wheel back and forth quickly while the truck is off? This one makes a noticeable click/clunk out of the rack - not sure its an issue or not as you don't feel any play going down the road or noises while driving. I tried it on another 2013 this weekend and same noise...

How about oil consumption? Yours use much?
