2012 F150 4x4 noise??
Hey folks. My '12 makes a heck of a racket when its in 4wd. It almost sounds like a squeaky fan belt..... The truck sounds fine in 2wd but as soon as I put it into 4x4 the noise shows up. I can make it disappear somewhat by feathering the throttle but it is most noticeable on acceleration or decel...
Any ideas?

Don't know what it is but it sure isn't right. Mine makes virtually no noise whatsoever. Time to see the dealer.

It goes in for service on Wednesday. I'm just hoping for a heads up to the possibilities. My truck sees alot of highway mileage and the weather is getting worse.
Gawd...I hope its a simple fix. I seem to have nothing but bad luck at dealers lately.....
More info.....The noise is most noticeable above 50 kph and is positively loud at highway speeds. I've never engaged the 4x4 system on dry pavement...its always been either snowy roads or gravel.
It's hard to describe the sound exactly.....like I said it almost sounds like a squeaky fan belt. I initally thought it may have been a blown u joint on the front driveshaft but everything looks ok underneath.

Turned my 4WD on for the first time this weekend, it too makes one hell of a noise! Roads were snow/ ice covered, I could not get anywhere with the junk Pirelli's! I thought the noise almost sounded like a noisy power steering pump, obviously we do not have one. But as OP stated it is most noticeable at higher speeds. I could hear it the most when I would be going 35-40 MPH and let off to coast to a stoplight but is also noticeable under acceleration.
Would like to hear what the dealer says about your problem! I just had mine at the dealer on friday for the ecoboost shudder/ misfire problem, they had to order the intercooler shield so mine will be going in soon again once the parts arrive.
Just for reference mine is a 2012 FX4 ecoboost 3.73

That's the sound eghatchin.....just like a sqeaky power steering belt or similar anyway. Hopefully I'll get an answer tomorrow. Goes in for 8:45 am...
Mine's a 2012 XL Regular cab 4x4 with the 5.0L and 3.73 gears too...

So no joy. The mechanic at the dealer narrowed it down to the t-case, pulled it out of the truck, tore it down and found nothing at all wrong.
I'm kinda at a loss. Everything seems to work just fine while in 4x4 except for that friggin noise driving me up the wall. I bought a new truck to hopefully avoid this kind of crap
The impression I get from the dealer is that they just want me to live with it.....which is completely unacceptable. Time to rattle some cages over at Ford Canada I suppose...

Seadragon: THATS IT!! Exactly the same noise my '12 is making.....
I had it out today in 4wd and it seems to me that the noise is starting to diminish somewhat. I put about 150 4x4 kilometers on it yesterday driving through some snowy weather and bad roads so MAYBE it gets better with mileage.
It just sucks that a brand new transfer case makes noise like this right off the hop. I've owned a lot of 4x4's and all of my Ford T-cases seem to make some kind of noise. My Chevies, Dodges, Toyotas, and even my two Jeeps had virtually silent t-cases....
Right now I'm hoping mileage helps as my dealer seems less than helpful in the matter.

I just used my 4x4 for the first time last night. Got a little snow here in upstate NY and figured I would test it out. My truck has 4k on it right now. The noise definitley concerned me the second I heard it. Sounds like a whirring type of noise. To me it was more noticeable when decelerating. Should I bring it in?
