2012 5.0 Engine Tick
#11
Go Ducks!!
Funny, i just posted the same problem on my 2012 5.0. The tick is definitely coming from the motor on the pass side. Haven't done an oil change and now has 1000 miles on it. My tick is there all the time, no matter if it's start up or just driving 200 miles. I might be taking it in on Friday.
Bought the truck two weeks ago with 5 miles on it. Build date was 7/23/2012 out of Dearborn.

there is also no such thing as a lifter on an overhead cam motor. the cam comes into direct contact with the roller rocker which then pushes down directly on the valve. there can be "valve tick" but nothing attributable to a lifter.
many overhead cam motors exhibit a slight tick on start up due to the fact that the oil has to come all the way from the bottom to the top of the motor to lubricate the valvetrain components.

if you did your first oil change at 1000 miles and changed to synthetic, that might be your problem as the engine is not fully broken in at 1000 miles, it takes longer than that for the rings to fully seat and synthetic provides "too much" lubrication for proper break in.

Mine used to have this "tick" on the passenger side. I now have 20K miles and I haven't noticed it in a long time. I used to hear it very well at a drive through window but I can't hear it anymore. Pretty quiet actually.

Now that is good to here... Mine has not made a sound today drove it about 60 miles. Sunday was the first time I heard mine tick. All of these overhead cam engine make some noise and I do think it normal BUT a tick on one tappet or lash ajuster is NOT normal. And it is strang why it is noticed on passenger side???

Did not see this thread, I posted in another one. My 2012 5.0L with 815 miles has the same tick, from the passenger side. I can hear it on the freeway with the radio turned off. It does sound like valve train noise. Hope it will go away. If it's still ticking at 5K I will take it in. Regards, JIm.

Guys here's a update on the ticking noise..... I went to 3 differant dealers today and ask if they heard anybody with this strange tick on passenger side of engine and guess what I was told??? You got it they NEVER had a issue with engine noise in any 5.0 HA HA. I ask a service manger to to come outside and check it out. He said that is normal on all the 5.0. Mine has only a slight tick at idle and you here it at the passenger side wheel well or maybe back near the rear of the engine on the passenger side. So I went out on the lot with the keys to a brand new 2012 with 6 miles and it was louder then mine. Maybe he is right they all do make a slight (ticking) sound on the passenger side. Next step today was to go back home and put my truck on the lift and get under it. I did and the noise on my truck sound like it is at the cat coverter area on the passenger side bank, you could put your head next to it and could here it lightly ticking. I think the noise we are hearing is normal valve train noise travaling down the exhust pipe on that side. These engine are a lot quiter than the 5.4 in my 2010 XLT, we can here everthing on these engines. Please let me know what you think, Let me know how loud your tick really is..Is it light and only here it at idle? Or loud enough to here with the door shut???
