can't imagine getting hot one time you would loose that much coolant. did it boil over?

I don't think it boiled over, but I might have a leak. and I might have a bad heater core (so I've heard on this site), because when I turn my AC or heat on, there is an odd smell coming out for the first few seconds.

check your oil for any antifreeze and look inside the cap where you fill oil
