2011+ F150 5.0L Cold Air Intake Dyno Testing
We recently posted a thread on this forum about our newest project truck: a 5.0L F150 FX4 project truck. Before we get into our testing, lets talk about the truck itself. It currently has 42,000 miles, 4x4 drivetrain, 33 inch tires, and 3.73 gears, and AFE 3 inch catback. We calculated a 23% drivetrain loss based on our preliminary dyno, which skewed our wheel horsepower slightly lower than expected. You can expect a 4x2 to put about 3-4 % more more to the rear wheels. We also ran our baseline dyno with our larger (and heavier) XD Misfits and 33" General Grabber tires, which, according to the guys at Extreme, does have a real affect on power numbers. We did all these tests in about four hours. The truck was fairly heat-soaked for all of runs between driving the 15 miles down to Extreme and quickly swapping out parts while the truck was on the lift. We didn't change any Smoothing or elevation numbers on the dyno to provide as close to real world numbers as possible. We're not trying to knock any of the manufactures here, but we did all of our testing with aftermarket PCM tuning. You will not see very much power with an intake alone. This doesn't mean you wont get mileage or throttle response, but as far as dyno numbers go, there isn't much to be had.
Stock Numbers:
Our F150 5.0L put 273 Rear Wheel HP and 293 RWTQ.
First Test:
AirAid 400-299 or 401-299 with 5 Star Custom Tuning (+27 HP)

That's great info. Did you do a dyno run with the custom tune and stock intake?

How do like that tuner compared to other systems out there?
Is there anything that stands about either of these cai's over the other? And how did they sound?
Trying to decide which I like better.
Really curious to see some dyno numbers for some of these exhaust systems too!
Thanks for all the info!!!
