So if I have a 2011 lariat with sync can I buy the $350 kit and the other harnesses will this still allow me to use sun or will I have to get another mirror to use that?

I really want to do this but know very little about how this all works.

I also have a 2011 Lariat and completed this about a month ago.

You need:
-The rear view mirror with video
-The tailgate emblem/camera assembly
-The pigtail harness for the camera, which would plug into the rear harness on a truck factory-equipped with the camera.

You probably want, but don't *need*:
-The proper headliner harness for your truck, which varies depending on what options you have (call TASCA with your VIN and they'll tell you what you need. The nice things about this are that it is fairy cheap (42 bucks or so) and that is will not require you to add wires to the 16-pin plug that attaches to your mirror - it gets swapped out with the new harness.

You don't need:
-A new main harness. You'll take power for the camera from the trailer hitch harness, and you can run composite cable (coaxial - like for your TV) from the camera harness up the driver's side and then tap into the appropriate wires that lead up to the headliner harness. It isn't hard at all, and is likely *way* easier than replacing the main harness.

t_b covered come good info and points. What harnesses you need depends on your preferences and skills. You can get away with just the tailgate harness and run your own wiring from the tailgate all the way to the mirror like i did but getting the 16 pin mirror connector or the pins to add to your existing connector can be a challenge. t_b's methods eliminates that issue. I used twisted pair cable similar to what would have been in the Ford harness. With his method or mine your will not have the ability to turn the guide lines on/off or the zoom feature. For those to work you must use all Ford harnesses and get the computer reflashed (programmed) by a willing dealer. If those options are not important to you then his method or mine will get the camera up and running. The eBay kit linked above will get you everything you need for the tailgate and at least one more harness but it's hard to tell which one. As for your Sync. question, that depends on if your truck as the Sync mic in the mirror or in the headliner like mine. If you have the one in the headliner you will have a small grate looking piece next to your map lights angled toward the driver. More toward the beginning of this thread I posted a list for all the Ford parts I used and there part numbers. And a link to the site I got the twisted pair cable from. I also have in my photo albums pictures that show the wiring diagrams, connectors, and harness locations. Hope that helps.

Let's say I have very limited knowledge in what I am doing. I am good with my hands and following instructions but never tackled anything like this.

Is this a novice type of install at all or more like an advanced one?

How long did it take you to finish it all?

Also with the zoom feature and guide lines, are the guide lines off or always on if I route how you did?

Just have a min. so I'll post more later. Everything but the wiring is very simple. The wiring is probably novice to intermediate. I can give you very specific wiring info. On mine the the guidelines are on.

How much were you quoted?

Did you order from your dealership?

I am unsure if I am up to the task and also want to make sure it's done right if I do it.

Well first off bought the mirror/camera/tail light harnes from ebay. Called Tasca parta and gave them my vin and told them what I was doing and they ordered the headliner, and main harnes for me. So far I have installed the tail light harnes which was easy. I will complete the install when I get all the other parts. I will lay all out to make sure I have all the parts I need. You'll have to remove the headliner for sure and not sure what else until I get into it.

It took me a few hours to complete my install but I only had lower the front of the headliner to add my own harness and I didn't have to remove the entire main body harness. If you want to do a complete OEM install I have some of the diagrams and such in my photo albums. Also if you don't mind waiting a while maybe smunczen can give you more info on how difficult it was after he's done with his. If he doesn't mind.
