Default 2011 - 2012 F-150 Transmission Issue Recall

I saw this on another thread (thanks to another member!) so I thought it might be good to start a thread so we can pool information.

http://www.mlive.com/auto/index.ssf/...ehicles_f.html

I called my local Ford Service Department and he wasn't aware of it yet, but did say the computer system would know about it and I gave him my VIN. He was able to see where it was in the system, but no fix is released yet. He said it will most likely just be an update to the PCM, but the update hasn't been released yet. He thought it would be in a few months; around fall.

Here is the text. I'm lucky this time. Mine was built 05/2011.

DETROIT, MI - Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday it's issuing five safety recalls covering about 285,000 vehicles.

The largest recall includes 201,900 vehicles from the 2011 and 2012 model years for a transmission issue linked to at least three accidents.

Ford F-150, Ford Expedition, Ford Mustang and Lincoln Navigator transmission issue
The Dearborn automaker has issued a safety recall for the 2011-2012 Ford F-150, and 2012 Ford Expedition, Ford Mustang and Lincoln Navigator for a potential problem with the output speed sensor in the transmission's lead frame.

The company said that in certain conditions the part can lead to a temporary downshift into first gear. Depending on how fast the vehicle is going, that could lead to an abrupt reduction in speed that could cause the rear tires to slide or lock up.

Ford said it's aware of three accidents reported and no injuries related to the issue.

The affected vehicles have a 6R80 transmission in certain Ford F-150s built at Dearborn Assembly Plant and Kansas City Assembly Plant, Aug. 19, 2011 through March 9, 2012; 2012 Ford Expedition vehicles built at Kentucky Truck Plant, Aug. 19, 2011 through Dec. 19, 2011; Ford Mustang vehicles built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant, Aug. 19, 2011 through Feb. 21, 2012; and Lincoln Navigator vehicles built at Kentucky Truck Plant, Aug. 19, 2011 through Dec. 17, 2011.

Of the 201,900 affected vehicles, 184,000 are in the U.S. and 17,900 are in Canada.

Dealers will inspect the vehicles and fix them at no cost.

Exactly what I wanted to know

I'm going to assume that on the build sheet, Ford uses MM/DD/YYYY, but can anyone confirm? Mine is 06.10.2011 @ Kansas City, but if it gets me a free PCM update, I'm taking it in.

I have heard of this failure and it requires replacement of the sensor. I can't remember for sure but I think you have to remove the lead frame (includes valve body and soleniods)
It is mentioned at 4:00 here

Ford uses the backwards dates. My build date is 30/11/2011

Use Ford Etis. Just enter your vin and it will give you specs.

Thanks. That's the site I used, but I only saw where it gives you to the build date in digits and not words.

October 6th 2011 @ Kansas for me - right smack in the midst.

Ugh. Hope it doesn't shift into second unexpectedly.

Luckily mine was an easy one to figure out, that's how I knew they do it backwards

Thankfully it hasn't yet. I get hard up shifts throughout, mostly 1 to 2 and some hard downshifts; almost like it doesn't know which direction to go. I've read where a PCM flash helps, but 10 minutes of work for $130 is high. I'll wait out the few months.

OH! The guy also told me that if our vehicles are affected we will get a recall letter in via snail mail.
