Default Defective engine in 2010 F-150??

Help....I am not a car mechanic at all. My husband died and I kept his 2010 F-150. It has about 67,000 miles on it and it is now skipping and acting like its stalling... missing timing. Took it in to repair shop. They told me the cam phasers were acting up due to an oil pressure problem ...bottom line was this engine has a design flaw and has to be replaced with a redesigned Ford engine. 20 hrs labor. Total cost 6,000 to 7,000!... does this sound right??? Are there options? Please remember that I am not a mechanic nor do i have tools to do engine work.

Thanks for your replies.

yea that sounds about par for the course on a 5.4 3V. depending how bad it is, you might be able to save it but if it was driven with low oil pressure for a while. that whole top end is trashed and it is better to just throw a new engine in it

Thank you for your quick response. I am not sure that it was driven very long with engine light on... but.... Does the quote of $7,000 sounds 'reasonable?

yea that does seem fairly average for an engine replacement. You probably could save a few bucks going with a junkyard engine but you run the risk of that being garbage too. and not all junkyards warranty their parts

When is it skipping? I doubt your 5.4 3V is trashed with 60k miles. Many shops employ bone heads who can’t diagnose those engines. We are seeing it more and more nowadays. Could likely be the solenoids are sticking and causing your stall outs, is it when you come to a stop? Any codes? Did they pull the valve covers and send you pictures of the cams or do they just “have a hunch”? Do your diligence best you can but never settle for a new engine until you see the inside to verify yours is actually bad.

With the warranty that Ford now offers on a lot of stuff, it may be worth considering an estimate from a Ford Dealer, rather than an independent, if you intend to keep.

Rather than playing 20 questions ...

HINT/TIP: Put your vehicle information (year, model, cab, trim, engine, wheelbase, _x4 drive, mileage, modifications, etc., etc.) in your signature -OR- provide it in your posting(s).

There are codes. I am not sure which.

Looking at it would be beyond my scope...I mean I can tell is wires are worn, belts damaged, but not this major stuff.

Not sure. My daughter picked it up from repair shop after work and it is at her house.
Thanks for the tip!
