Weitz, Do you mean the rubber boot? I found the easiest way was to unclip it where it connects at the truck body, then slide the whole shebang back down and into the door. It gives you room to work. As far as the fabric or cloth eletrical tape wrap on the wire bundle, I just unwrapped it as much as i needed. It's around the white stiffening rod and it's sticky and messy anyhow.

Here's what mine looked like.

It was a lot cheaper than a new harness.
Having the same issue on my 09. Already replaced both actuators last year because both rear doors wouldn't unlock. Did fix the problem. Now I have "door ajar" message on the right back door. Can someone point out where is that door harness at the b post connector?

One mechanic suggested to replace the smart junction box.

Open the door and look at the rubber accordion boot in the hinge. The wire bundle runs through it. The rubber fits around the fitting in the body of the truck. Wiggle it off, and you will see the black plastic piece in my picture. It has a few tabs you may need to push in to get the plastic to move back a 1/2 inch. Slide the rubber boot off the wires and into the door so you have some room to work. The wires are probably cracked or broken, just like in the pic.

OK... a bit of an old thread, but having the same issues on my 2010 Crew passenger side rear door.

Symptoms:
Lock/unlock not working
After a while, the door ajar started illuminating as well, even with door shut.

Originally thought it was the door lock actuator, however, affter buying a new latch and plugging that into the wiring harness, the new actuator didn't work either.
After some research, it looks like folks are seeing issues with the wiring as well.
This looks like a real bear of a job, but it's actually not that bad.

Here are the relevant photos:

Cr@p... I keep uploading photos, but they don't show. Lovely.

Alright... to see pix, look at my photo albums.
I clearly can't figure out how to post pix into messages.
