I put Infiniti speakers in mine at all four corners. Cost a little more than what you are looking at. Take a look at Amazon if you are interested. They have frequent sales on one or more models.

DITTO on putting infinity's in all 4 corners! Helped a ton...however, in order for the stereo to sound decent (on par w most other mfgs - I dont know why Ford can't put a decent factory sound system in these trucks!! Other mfgs have been installing much better sound systems std now for years) you will either need to replace the head unit - which usually is out of the question if you want to keep the SYNC etc....or install a post head unit processor and probably a small amp to bring the sound "up to par" IMO...

How hard is it to configure an amplifier with a single 8 or 10" sub? I read on here doing searches it's a nightmare if keeping the stock sync head unit. My 2012 has the CD player which I will never use. I am not sure what to do really.

Just bought the truck going on two weeks now. 2012 with 18K miles all is well minus blown speaker. The sound sucks at the moment.

So start out with a decent set of speakers first. You may be happy with the new sound. If not, continue on from there. The speakers will be necessary no matter what you do.

Ya pretty much a nightmare...or at least if your using the stock head unit - if so you will have to also use a good 'signal processor' prior to the amp because using the factory head unit the sound levels/signals are crap and by the time you spend $ for a decent processor you might as well have bought a high end head unit with Bluetooth capability and you'd be close to factory SYNC 'usefulness' if you primarily play music from your phone or use navigation from your phone like I do... Or another concept I really like is modifying the dash to accommodate an iPad for boh music and navigation .... Now that is the best of both worlds but again can get pricey!

The OEM speaker size is a 4x6 which in my opinion sucks. To wide and not deep enough to get bass out of. I would suggest getting some mounts that change the 4x6 to 6.5 and you can't go wrong with them. And there are a lot more options in the 6.5 market. I have the kicker 6.5 in mine and live them paid about $150 for 4 speakers and mounts. I have a 11' XLT Scab.
