It seems to me after reading a lot of these posts that one the biggest issues faced is the dealerships attitude/knowledge. How about we post the names of the troublesome dealerships and the good dealerships so we can know where and where not to go. I live near Temple, TX and have had good experiences with Johnson Bros. there.

Interesting reply to a 6 month old post. Your tone kind of reminds me of how my transmission downshifts when it is cold. Glad to hear that the reflash has helped some transmissions. I now have 20,000 on mine and it still acts the same way so next time I take it in I will request the reflash, AGAIN. And I'll make sure to check the odometer before I drop it off.

After reading this thread I realized what I felt in my truck was not normal either. I felt the 1st n 2nd gear slamming around. I told the service writer a lot of people online were complaining about this issue. And there was a TSB to have the trans flashed. He looked at me sorta like I was nuts.. And to top it off the truck is only 3 weeks only. I finally got some CD's burnt to play in the 6 disc changer to get CD ERROR. The CD player was broke and they have to order me a new Sony 6 disc changer. When I went to pick the truck up they said the mechanic went out with the computer hooked up and everything is fine. NO codes. no funny shifting. He only put 10 miles on it. I told him the problems seems to be in the stop and go traffic... So, we'll see. Maybe I'll have to print this thread up and take to him.
OH YA.. one more thing.. I asked him if adding one of those Edge programmer would void my warranty, He told me it would void my warranty... so.. if you guys have em'
in your trucks.. Id take it out before you go in.

Another reflash - finally running good!
Hey manic5_2001, I want to THANK YOU 10x for posting your info on these xmissions!! My 2010 has over 30,000 miles now, and over the past year, I had the xmission reflashed twice. In both instances, they took less than 1/2 hour with no miles (I think) on the odometer afterward. I finally got to the point of just accepting it...
After reading your posts, I decided to have one more go at it since I had to get the steering wheel replaced anyway. The service writer stated that he would see if there was a new update. To make a long story short, they had the truck almost all day, reflashed the xmission, and I noticed about 14 miles on my truck afterward. He said that the tech made sure that he performed the latest update and drove through all of the cycles.
I've only drove it around town about 20 miles since the reflash, but it now drives like an entirely new truck. It's amazing what a new steering wheel and a seemingly new xmission will do to a ride! I'm just plain giddy about it and hope that it keeps up.... thanks dude!

Part of the challenge with transition to fly by wire is that until your tech develop a extensive experience with a new platform, they are pretty much limited to what the diagnostic software is telling them. My best experience is to work with the service manager to it a good tech and then use the same one every time. You will learn together how to figure out what the vehicle is doing and address any issues.
If the water pump breaks, you can see and touch the failure. But we have seen unanticipated failures on cars where an unexpected condition in the ECM does not throw an engine related code, but does cause the TCM to go into safe mode and you get hard shifts. There is a problem but the failure is an out of range condition in the firm ware for which there is no diagnostic and thus no code is thrown.
You and the tech can over time learn to recognizecmany of these failures and address them
We had one car that went nuts for over a year till finally an engineer was dispatched to look at the car. He ended up pulling out the ECM and it's enclosure and found that the pins in the connecter on the bottom of the box were not properly weather sealed and every time the car was exposed to wet roads, the ECM would stator throwing random seeming codes. The dealer techs could not diagnose this out of range condition so kept swapping out the ECM. In swapping it out, some of the corrosion was cleaned off and the car ran fine for days or weeks, then the problem was back
The skills that made a tech effective tow ro three years ago do not apply to software. You can not touch it or put a wrench on it... They are atvthe mercy of the software diagnostic code given them by engineers. And as a 35 year engineer, we can not predict every failure mode or condition
So I look for a good tech and stick with him.
And I have to believe that most service depts are a lot more frustrated than we are when they can not diagnose a problem
They are trapped between the angry customer and the company bean counters who do not want to " waste " warranty labor dollars on an undiagnosed problem. They put a lot of pressure on the dealers to cut costs and only work on known problems.

I can appreciate the complexity of the technology since I am an electrical engineer. But, if I treated my clients with the same attitude, I would not be in business very long. Yeah, this could have been a bad apple scenario. But, after reading through these threads for the past 8 months, there seems to be a larger issue.

2010 fx4 supercab with 8k miles. Very hard/sloppy downshift from 2nd to 1st which you can hear and feel. I've been in the shop 3 times, twice for the re-program of the Trans and once for the re-grease in the rear. I believe this is not a drive shaft issue because the truck also can shift hard between 1st and 2nd.
My problems are intermittened also but seem to be worse since the last re-program. I have contacted Ford and I now have a "dedicated rep" who will work my case. I am patient but not going to keep bringing in a new truck to the shop when there appears to be no fix. Unfortunately requesting a Transmission does not seem to be an answer I just want it fixed but if I'm not getting any love from Ford I might make a claim with the MN BBB on the lemon law. If anyone else is having this issue please feel free to email me and I will let you know the outcome (good or bad).

I use first as a creeper, when it hits second I apply more pedal and in third is when I really apply pedal.
When I took delivery back in Feb of '10, it was cold here in Dankville. I used to feel a bump when shifting into second, but when the weather warmed and I got more miles on, the bump disappeared. I hope it remains that way.
