I've driven FX4 for almost a year with similar problems to those mentioned here, finally took it to the dealer for a reflash last Thursday and i'm pleased to say that i notice a huge difference so far. I had problems with 2-1 or 1-2 shifting in stop and go situations that at times were quite severe and at other times was fine. Hopefully it lasts!

I had this problem with my wife's 08 expedition. It's has the 5.4 ltr V8 and the 6 speed transmission. Shifted hard from 2 to 1. Had it re-flashed. Now it runs like a champ. very noticeable difference.

Went to the dealer today for a oil change. Told them what was going on with it, and my writer immediately know what the issue was. Said their are 2 remedies. Sometimes the reprogramming fixes it... There is another one where they have to break it down and replace some kind of seal. I Will get the exact fix when they look at mine. Hate that the problem is there in the first place, but am glad that the dealer has good knowledge of it and is ready to fix it. Just have to leave it there for a day so they can drive it and determine war fix needs to be done.

Had it, so you can check it off someone has had it fixed, oh my dad as well. IF the dealer performs the TSB to perfection it WILL work. However its a pretty involved reflash not a simple hook it up walk away. If you get your truck back from the dealer and you dont have 20+ miles more on the OD then they did it wrong find a new dealer. My truck had 100 miles put on it during the reflash. To say no one has had it fixed is ridiculus cause if you DID a simple search on THIS FORUM many people have had it done and it worked. The 5k thing is BS it should shift fine from the get go, had mine done at 4k I was experiencing intermittant harsh shifting. Had it done, from that moment on it was like NIGHT AND DAY.
To everyone else there is a TSB out there here are the links to all the TSB ford has produced for the F150. I suggest you read all of them and 90% of the issues people come on here and complain about are known and have a FIX. Time to do some research on your own and quit jumping the gun on issues without first inquiring about the issue. Here are the links EDUCATE yourself. I know I cant spell, dont care.

I think my truck is starting to do this. I have about 2000 miles on my XLT Screw and just started noticing a pretty good clunk when the truck shifts from 3-2 and 2-1 when I am going slow. I don't actually feel it though.
Do you guys feel the hard shift always or just notice the noise?
I suppose I need to mention this when I bring it in for my first oil change...

Interesting reply to a 6 month old post. Your tone kind of reminds me of how my transmission downshifts when it is cold. Glad to hear that the reflash has helped some transmissions. I know this question will sound very ignorant, but what is a reflash? is it something performed via the trucks computer? Do Mechanics still use spanners or do they just have laptops now?

Mine only does this when its cold, too! especially going up hill, its a pretty violent downshift. Once it warms up, I'm unable to replicate it. So I assume that the reflash fix has not helped your condition? I'm going to get mine into Ford soon to be fixed, but I'd love to know your truck's history as far as what they've dianosed and tried doing to fix it.

Just had work done on my 2010 SCrew 5.4L. I have been having an issue with knocking at start/stop and extremely harsh downshift at 50-55mph. This has been going on for 8 months and have had it at the dealer 3 times. The first time they said they could find nothing wrong (no codes).
The second time, I was told that all this was normal in a "fly-by-wire" vehicle and that since I had never driven one before, it would feel "strange". Since both problems at the time were intermittant, I could not convince the service guy that the problem existed.
The third time was the charm. I made sure that I took it in after driving it for a little while since the knocking was worse when warmed up. Again, they tried to show me the door saying that the truck was "trailer hitching" and it was normal. I argued stronger this time and demanded that someone at least go on a test ride with me. I was able to get the shop foreman to ride with me and at the first stop, <clunk>. To which he replied, "Oh yeah, we can fix that." Turned out to be the TSB for the loose drive shaft.
The shop foreman also addressed the second problem saying that a TSB had been released for it. So after a reflashing, I was good to go. I do not know what TSB was applied.
The truck drives great now. The jury is still out on the second issue since it only occured 3 times in 8 months. We shall see. It amazes me that it took 3 trips to the dealer to finally get someone to recognize the trouble and not claim customer ignorance.
