Default 2009 F150 crew cab poor mileage

I have a new 2009 F150 Platinum crew cab 4wd. I love the truck, except the fuel economy. It has about 4,000 miles on it, and I have yet to see better than 14 MPG on the highway.

I just tested it the other day running 70 MPH on the interstate with standard fuel and got 13.7MPG.

I ordered the truck with 3.55 gears, so I figured with the 5.4L, 6 speed and those high speed gears I should be getting some decent fuel economy. My 2007 Chevy 5.3L was getting 17MPG consistently on the highway. I am dissapointed with the mileage on this truck.

Anyone else see this?

Thanks

How many miles did you go on the highway to get that number? Was it one single trip or what? I get about 15 or so mixed freeway/city. On a single trip for a decent amount of miles on the freeway at 70 you should get better than 14 though.

maybe a few thousand more miles will improve the number. could you be getting poor quality gasoline from your gas station maybe

Should be broken in by 4000 miles, it might get a touch better.

I'm pretty much a believer that gas is gas, so I wouldn't think that's your problem.

I have close to the same vehicle with same milage and get the same, I believe these Fords like their fuel. my previous vehicle was a 02 heavy half GMC with the 6.0 ltr. engine and got considerable better milage. My dealer tells me that this millage is about right for the 5.4L of course no one mentioned this when I bought.

Also keep in mind that the highway estimate (18 MPG) isn't for 70+ MPH highways. I believe I read that in the testing standards the average speed for the highway part of the test is only 48 MPH. (of course this is mixed in with a bunch of other tests to reach the final estimate) But at any rate, you won't get what you think should be highway MPG at 70-75 MPH, more like around 55-60.

I have a 5.4 Screw with 3.55 gearing and I get consistently 20+ on the flat at a speed of between 65 and 70 and a light touch on the pedal. I have 6700 miles on my truck now and have been getting these readings since about 3500 miles.

On grades, and in speeds above 70, the mileage degrades depending on the condition.

I have checked my MPG computer readout with simple math and it is within about + .5 mpg with the on board computer.

Around town I am getting 12 to 15 depending on how and where I drive, as I live in a region with a lot of hills.

Compared to my '04 F250, this new truck has me in seventh heaven with the gas mileage and so much more.
