Default 2009 - 2014 Fuse 27 Melting Issue

So, just took my 2013 Lariat to the dealer to have this TSB Performed.

What I do not understand is why is this fuse not blowing rather than melting? It is apparently pulling more current than the fuse can handle. It was replaced with another 20a fuse of a different type. So, 20a is 20a no matter what type of fuse it is. In my opinion, the fuse should blow. Or, is the quality of these little micro fuses not that great.

Any electrical gurus out there wish to chime in.

It's not pulling more current than the fuse is rated for, the contacts the fuse plugs into are not beefy enough to handle the amount of current, design flaw so it melts instead of blowing.

Wink

Funny I just see this. It just happened to me. Yesterday afternoon, I was going out for my Sunday drive. I hit the remote start so the truck would warm up a little. I then went out, hopped in and I idled out my driveway, went to the development entrance and turned down the side road that leads to the main highway (actually a two lane with shoulders). I stop, wait for traffic, then give her a little gas to pull out......and it DIES! Nothing. No bang, boom, whistles, squeels, nothing. I was barely moving but had just enough momentum to get across the road while I was fighting the steering to get turned onto the shoulder. I put it in park and still no warning lights, buzzes, bells, nothing. So I try to start her and all she does is turn over. So I call the number on my insurance card and get prompted for road side assistance. Had to wait an hour for the Tow truck. In the mean time I had to put the stock tune back in as I waited (I have my Livewire mounted on the windshield). Tow truck comes to take her to the dealer, and I call my sister for a ride. So I do research this morning and discover this fuse issue. So once it gets late enough this morning(7:30am), I call the service department. They already have her in the bay. I tell the guy about the fuse issue. Said he'd check the truck over than call. I get a call about 11:00am. He says "Yup", the fuse is gone, and there is a TSB. It will be about $417.00 Smackeroooos. I say go ahead. Get a call around 2:30 and she's ready. Don't know exactly what was done till I go pick her up tomorrow. Guessing the fuse block was replaced?..

Nope, they just replace the fuse and the terminal with one that can actually handle the load. I've had my repair kit for a while just haven't got around to changing it yet.

Ah, so it's the fuse block that cannot handle the 20a. Need to see if there are any other 20a micro fuses in that box.

Notice the size of the replacement fuse and terminal in the pic above? Will still blow if current exceeds 20A but now the terminal itself can actually handle the load.

$417 sounds way steep.....kit is less than $20 and less than an hour labor. Total on my ticket was $188 before my extended warranty. Advisor helped me out a little with the deductible.... paid $86 and left.

Do you have a PDF of those instructions you can email me or post on the net for download?

Only thing I did notice is there is still a 20a fuse in the old location. Guess it does not matter since it goes to nothing.
