Personally, I'd change it after break-in. New parts have to wear into each other. You will have shavings in your oil. Although nobody does this, it can't hurt to get those shavings out ASAP and put in some good full synthetic.

I just changed mine at 5500, I'll probably do it again at 7500 and then follow the manual to a T until my warentee runs out, then to hell with that 5w-20 crap!

PG 419:

NORMAL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND LOG
Vehicles Equipped with a 3.5L, 3.7L or 5.0L Engine
Your vehicle is equipped with an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor that determines
when the engine oil should be changed based on how your vehicle is used.
By using several important factors in its calculations, the monitor helps
reduce the cost of owning your vehicle and reduces environmental waste at
the same time. This means you do not have to remember to change the oil
on a mileage-based schedule; the vehicle lets you know when an oil change
is due by displaying OIL CHANGE REQUIRED in the information display.
The following table is intended to provide examples of vehicle use and its
impact on engine oil change intervals; it is provided as a guideline only.
Actual engine oil change intervals depend on several factors and generally
decrease with severity of use.
When to expect the OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message
Miles (km) Vehicle use and examples

Normal
7500-10000 miles (12000-16000 km)

– Normal commuting with highway driving
– No, or moderate, load or towing
– Flat to moderately hilly roads
– No extended idling

Severe
5000-7499 miles (8000-11999 km)

– Moderate to heavy load or towing
– Mountainous or off-road conditions
– Extended idling
– Extended hot or cold operation

Extreme 3000-4999 mile (4000-7999 km)

– Maximum load or towing
– Extreme hot or cold operation

Do you guys go full synthetic around the 2nd oil change? I'll use the Motocraft stuff from the dealer, just wondering when to come off the blend and over to the full.

option 1 is change the oil when it tells you it needs it. Option 2 is change the oil based on superstition/outdated guidelines/folklore/belief that you know better than the engineers that built your engine. Whichever works for you.

My spidy sense detects a touch of sarcasm.

I didn't know the trucks had an oil sampler installed in them. If they don't have a sampler then how does the truck know the oil NEEDS to be changed. Mileage and time are not accurate, just like an individual's preference based on experience is not accurate. As far as having total faith in engineers and designers I would like to point those folks to the Ecobust intercooler design in the F150s.

I do my first oil change between 500 - 1000 miles, not because of oil deterioration, but because of the manufacturing and break-in wear particles that are hopefully being retained in the filter. The last thing I want is for the filter to have a break thru and allow the solids' contamination into the engine. An early oil change is just cheap insurance against a cheap oil filter.

The second oil change will come around 5,000 miles with a sample of the oil being analyzed for oil condition. After that who knows, I use my oil report and my superstition/outdated guidelines/folklore/belief.

Some say that there is an additive (from the factory) that aids in break-in.
Don't change the oil too soon.

Personally, I won't be running a full synthetic for over a year/12,000 miles or so.
Mine is not using oil (as far as I have detected) like some others have. I would definitely wait till it stops using oil before going to a full synthetic.

I find it humorous how so many people concoct their own ideas of break-in oils, needing to change at <1000 miles to remove metal shavings, etc. These trucks hold a large quantity of oil which is one of the reasons the oil change intervals are extended. I will put my faith in the Ford engineers, because after all, I would hope they want me to come back and buy another truck in 10 years. Guys who change their oil at 3k miles and justify it as peace of mind are throwing their money away, not to mention wasting a non-renewable resource.

I plan on changing mine on when the oil life monitor gets below 20% and whenever I get nice warm day! Right now, I am at 26% oil life with 6700 mi, so I will end up doing my first change somewhere between 7 and 8k miles.
