04-08 5.4 v.s. 09-10 5.4
I'm looking to upgrade trucks soon and I'm curious about mpg and problem comparisons between the older 5.4 to the newer I own an 04 5.4 and have dumped money into the spark plug problems and such. So I'm curious about if it gets better than my current 14-16 mpg and if anyone has had any major issues with the newer engine.

I also have a 2010 5.4 screw with just a level and 35/12.5r20 and I'm getting 13.8 mpg. I haven't adjusted for the new tires so my mileage may be off some but it seems pretty close.

I've got a 2010 Screw with stock size tires and no lift. I get right at 16 mpg. I've only had it a few months, but no history of problems. My father in law has one, too. No issues.

Maybe to many trucks?
We had a 2006 F150 XLT 5.4L it got 15-16 all stock with 105K miles.
Our current 10 F150 Lariat 5.4L gets 17-18 all stock with 56K miles. Doesn't seem to have any problems however only had it about a month. I had a couple problems with the 06 but that truck was pretty beat up.
The 10 seems to have more power on the low end then the 06 plus the 10 feels like a better transmission then the 06 again the 06 was beat up so this may not be a fair comparison.

Nothing but problems. If you do a search, you'll see that the 2009/2010 do have a lot of issues that were corrected in 2011.
The transmission was the worse. Had know defects and would slam into first gear when coming to stops. Ford sent out an engineer and he couldn't even fix it. This is a widely known issue. In 2011 Ford redesigned the transmission even though it carries the same name. Changed clutches and added electronic features.
I also had problems with chassis/frame issues. Luckily I had a great salesman and he helped me out of the truck into the 2012 I have today. World of difference even though they look a like. As for the 5.4L engine, it was the only thing that didn't have problems. BUT was a dog for towing next to the new 5.0L and even worse for daily driving.
If you're going to buy used, get a 2011 or up, IMO.

The 09-10 is worlds better than the 04-08. My 04 was a good truck but my 09 now is ALOT better. Mpg around my town is about 17. On the highway i get almost 20. Thats with 3.31 gears though. The 09 feels like it has quite abit more power too (although it doesnt have too much more lol).

The 09-10 have an electric fan instead of mechanical (frees up horsepower) and it has a 6 speed tranny vs the 4 speed in the old one. I put 203,000 miles on my 2006 5.4 and no problems at all. (Other than the spark plug fiasco). I would have driven it anywhere the day I sold it. I have 55k on my 2010 and no issues other than the evap purge valve ($100 part) which is a pretty common issue. Hope this helps.

I went from an 08 fx4 5.4 to an 2010 5.4 xlt both trucks were xcab. The 2010 has much more power, I'm more than happy with its performance. Gas mileage is also better, I average about 21 on the highway and got as much as 23mpg versus the 08 which I only got 19 on the highway at best. The brakes are much improved and the overall feel of the truck is better. Both trucks I kept bone stock.

I didn't have an 04-08 so I can't compare, but my 2010 get's 15-17mpg city and 21-22 hwy in the warm months. I use my remote start way to much to stomach calculating the winter numbers lol
I don't have a light foot in the city, but I keep it around 65mph on the hwy.
