Default Winch ratings?

I am looking into winches but am wondering other peoples thoughts on the capacity I should go with. I know the "the more the better" mentality could come into play here, but I also don't want to go overkill.

Is there a general "rule of thumb" that one can use when considering capacities?

I usually go with 2x curb weight minimum single line pull.

That's pretty much what I was assuming and was going to go with. Thanks.

Is there any other input from anyone else?

I used my warn 8k winch last night 3 times to pull myself out and to pull my friends 2wd 08 f150 out. it did very well I got stuck in a ditch and I attatched my winch to my friends f150 and I actually started pulling him toward me (he was on concrete and spinning out) 8k is plenty but a 9.5k winch would probably be better

I would also get an accessory kit with straps, tree savers, shackles, ****** block and gloves. I would also get a couple extra ****** blocks and a field anchor.

ramsey has a 8k entery level for like 400 thats perfect for f150s. a tip: in worst case scenarios bury your spare tire for a quick last resort anchor

i'd go with at least two times your curb weight. but to be on the safe side go with a little bit more if you can
