I think most people recommend at least a 12k winch for trucks our size... a high lift jack and some straps can somewhat take the place of a winch if you want to cheap out. I'm not an evironmentalist or anything but I like the out doors and winch cable damages trees so a webbed strap is nice. I forget what they are called but if you are going to use steel cable (over synthetic) it's good to have one of those weighted blanket things to throw over the cable in the even it snaps... it takes some of the shock out so it doesn't whip as bad. maybe a pully block (increase the pulling power of the winch at the sacrifice of the length of the cable). this seems over looked occasionally but a shovel can get you out of a lot of situations and is cheap. another thing is try and always go out with more than one vehicle.

im a one truck trip type of guy so thats not really a big concern of mine idk if a 12k would be completely necessary the strap your saying is a tree saver i believe and a snatchblock to double the rated pull weight i have a few high lifts and shovels etc etc but i like my bed space and want something a bit more user friendly

has anyone used the rough country 9.5k or 12k winches with their hidden mount? are they any good ? they have the same specs as most of the lower grade warn winches but at 1/2 the price tag !

I would not go anywhere without a snatchblock and at least 3 come-alongs. Winches are great if the tree or rock you need to winch to is in front of the rig but if they are not then you need to be able to change the direction of pull or use something else. I've used 2 come-alongs to pull a truck back on the road when the winch crapped out. Time consuming, but it does the trick.
As to winches, I've got a 12,000 lb Warn on my 1978 F-150. It seems to do everything I need it to do as long as I can get the cable to a tree or a solid rock.

My buddy's all run warn winches, they seem to be reliable. I would get atleast a 9k pound winch.
They cost more but I mean I'd rather spend a few extra bucks on a good one then be out in the middle of no where and have it break on me. Another issue is the rating for how it will hold up after being submerged in water. If your thinking about a winch I'm sure your truck will see some deep water. Some will fail upon submerging in water, fry, stop working, ect. Just read reviews and ask people who run them. One I know to stay away from is "badlands" the price is tempting but the quality is sub par.
