Bleeds Ford Blue
BARE BONES BASIC - a lot of this has already been said:
- Travel with at least 2 vehicles including your own - "Never Wheel Alone" doesn't mean bring your buddy or boy/girlfriend along in the passenger seat.
- Bring a cell phone AND THE 12V CHARGER for it. Also TELL somebody before you leave where you're going and when you should be back by - sucks if you're out in the middle of the woods with no cell service. Portable CB and HAM radios work as well.
- SECURE YOUR GEAR - MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS PROPERLY TIED DOWN. IT'LL HURT LIKE ALL GET OUT IF YOU GO OVER A BUMP THE WRONG WAY AND GET HIT WITH A WRENCH IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD.
- Have at least one recovery point (heavy hook, d-ring shackle, etc.) on each end of your vehicle.
- Have at least one tow strap if not two and good bow shackles. Also make sure you use a strap that does NOT have hooks on the ends - get the one with the loops. Use the straps for extractions not a chain. When a chain breaks it isn't pretty - you risk causing damage to the vehicles as well as seriously injuring anyone nearby. A chain has enough force to go through glass. Chains are good for pulling brush / fallen trees out of the way - that's it. And keep your straps properly rolled up and ready for action, knots are not your friend when the clock is ticking.
- Have at LEAST a basic set of hand tools for repairs - specialty tools for your vehicle never hurt either. A spark plug socket and WD-40 does wonders for hydro-locked trucks.
- Bring along some food and water as well as a small bag for trash - we off-roaders have enough problem with Johnny Law closing trails for polution - be considerate and take out what you bring in.
- Spare liquids - coolant, oil, PS, PB, grease, etc. should be on your list.
- Spare parts - bulbs, lugs, hoses, belts, air filter, etc. should be on your list as well
- A GOOD jack - not that cheap POS that can with your stock truck
- Make sure your spare tire is in good condition and the same size as your other 4 (or six for dually drivers). Your stock 31" spare tire (or w/e size it is) will do more harm than good on the way home when the rest of your tires are upsized - say a 35 or so.
- Have a basic first aid kit with extra gauze pads/wrap. It will always be thanked for when needed. IMPORTANT - CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATES ON PILLS AND OTHER PERISHABLE SUPPLIES CARRIED!!!
- Have a change of clothes and other small personal things like sunblock or bug spray.
- If your vehicle is equiped with a winch a "Tree Saver" should be in your recovery bin. You may need that same tree a few years fron now only to find it has died and fallen over since you were inconsiderate - didn't use your "Tree Saver" and your winch line cut it too deep.
