some people say to use a winch thats twice the weight of your truck. i've seen some guys use 8k lb winches and a ****** block and did fine. i personally am going to go with a 12k winch and ****** block to be on the safe side. it'll come down to affordability as well. winches get expensive fast

From what I've heard 1.5x the weight of your truck is recommended.

im not too familiar with brands. my best advice would be to google reveiws for the winch you want to get including the model number. make sure you dont look at the reveiws on the actual website, they always seem pretty biased to me lol.

and 1.5 x's would be good to i think. it all depends on what kind of wheeling you plan on doing. if you plan on doing mostly flat landing it, one thats not double your weight would be ok because you really wouldnt be moving the entire weight of the vehicle. but if there are inclines or deep deep holes you plan on going through i'd get the heaviest one you can afford. i'm planning on getting a heavy one because i eventually plan on makin my truck a recovery truck.

Think about it this way, if you step in deep mud most times your foot comes out without your boot, think about the force it takes to get the boot out, now think about the weight of your truck and how it's affected by the suction of mud and how much force it takes to get it unstuck, proper winch rating is the trucks weight x 2, my truck with me and my tools is 6170lbs, I will be using a 12,000lb winch minimum, probably a champion winch from costco due to my budget but it's better than no winch

Harbor Freight isn't exactly known for high quality. I can't say one way or the other as to the quality of their winches. But one thing to think about is do you really want to put your trust in something cheap. Get a good heavy winch made by a company with a good name. You never know, your life could depend on it some day.
