What's your definition of off road? IE driving thru a field when dry, or going thru hilly woods while wet out? For just kicking some dust up, you're truck will be fine. But if you want to really go offroad, you need 4x4. Just no way around it.

And doing a 4x2 to 4x4 conversion CAN be done but it's most definately a job I would want to tackle....

don't listen to that "you need four wheel drive" crap. the best desert racers ALL have two wheel drive trucks. and everybody gets stuck sometimes, no matter what they have. horsepower , traction and chosing the right line is what's required. back in the day, ak miller in a 300 cu inch f-100 two wheel drive could actually pull parnelli jones in his big oly bronco on the laguna chapala dry lake bed in the early baja 1000 races. my 2001 2 wheel drive lightning has zero problems prerunning all the mexican SCORE events. just do a little research and try going on race-dezert.com for some hints in the shop section and don't listen to that 4x4 crap. [although i do think ford makes great four wheel drive trucks. you just don't necessarily need one to go off road.]

and just another small note to let you know i'm not strokin' you. i just won the baja 500 in class in a two wheel drive ford ranger. no four wheel drives were entered.
