winner winner christmas dinner. a long time ago at scammons lagoon half way down the baja california peninsula, me and my partner took my old landcruiser to get as close to the waterline as we could get to watch the whales do what they do and got stuck in the nastiest s--t i've ever seen. i mean it was stinky, slimy, sticky and did i mention stinky? we started in with the shovels and the more we tried to dig, the stucker we got. the mud wouldn't come off the shovels. we scewed around for hours. i really have a hard time trying to remember if i've ever been as miserable. i decided to walk back to a ranchers place i'd seen on the way in to see about getting a hand. he had an old chevy dually flat bed and some stiff half inch cable. i asked him how much he'd haul us out for and he said $20 .........for every member of his family. that came to $120 if my memory serves me well. well, we had to get his truck running for him and off we went. we got stuck in the early morning and it was starting to get dark. with a combination of our big nylon rope and his cable, and after a few tries, there was a sick sounding suction noise audible for miles i suppose and finally, out came the land cruiser. it was unrecognizeble as to what kind of vehicle it was. we were 120 bucks lighter, absolutely covered in stinky *** mud, completely worn out and it was all we could do to take a sponge bath to get that s--t semi off of us. just as we were starting to make a little dinner before it got dark, a brand new jeep cj5 with a never been used 8000lb. warn winch came rolling up to see if we were ok. he was itchin' to use his new toy. i was stunned. i didn't know what to say. all we had to do in the first place was wait it out and not do nuthin'...if you're there, someone will eventually follow your tracks and show up. so if you're dumb enough to go out solo like we did, and you hairlip it and get stuck, the important thing is to make the proper evaluation on how stuck you are. if you think it's futile and hopeless, then go find a nice comfy place in the shade and wait. someone will follow your tracks in eventually. doing nothing sometimes is the best way to get unstuck.

I drove my old 92 Tempo so deep into the sand that all I had to do was release the clutch and the tires would spin, no accelerator required. So I dug them out a little then shoved some boards that I found in a construction site under the front tires and drove out on top of those. Worked like a charm.

Tire chains, a come-a-long, and a good shovel.

And if I'm in mud, I toss rocks and wood to grip. My buddy was in a deep mud hole and I tossed a bunch of rocks and wood and he was able to grip enough to get up speed to get out..

LS or open diffs can sometimes work a little better with the proper use of your parking brake, or the regular brake pedal as this helps both wheels to share the power.

Dry, loose sand can be pretty tough to get out of(lived near a beach for many years down in southern Louisiana)... lower your tires pressure and dump some water(from a beer cooler??) around your tires to soak the dry sand thus packing it down and allowing a little better traction... most of the time it works great to get you out of a stuck...

Muddy holes are fun to get out of... just go for max traction and don't sit there revving and spinning to get out... all you'll be doing is digging in deeper. Placing rocks, sticks, branches, bushes, etc. under the tires will help also. Logs and large branches usually don't work as well cause they get muddy and are even harder to get decent traction on than the slick mud you were in in the first place, plus you'll need to climb over them to get going.

Always try for MAX traction, cause usually spinning just makes it worse....

If all else fails.... break out the damn winch and pull yourself/your friends out... and get back to off-roading...

Most everything has been mentioned but I'll see if I can expand.
Messing with air pressure is good, a little E-brake works well, rocking it back and forth, turning the steeringwheel back and forth to help the side lugs grab, have friends jump up and down on a bumper, put material such as wood, rocks, cat litter, ect under the tires, digging with a shovel, Hi-Lift the truck up and push it to the side to get it out of a rut, chains, wrap a chain tightly around a tire and to a tree or rock and use it to winch you forward/backward.

I was going to mention the turning the wheel, and rocking back and forth but I figured it was common sense lol.

Can you elaborate on this "wrap a chain tightly around a tire and to a tree or rock and use it to winch you forward/backward". I'm trying to imagine this.. and not to sure how it would work? Seems like it might F-your stuff up.

EDIT: Bobkyle2 explained it to me.. it was what I thought it was. Seems like a good tool if your solo and get stuck.

best tip for getting unstuck ...is learning your trucks transmission...and picking the best gear selection ...and transfer gears.....most people dont know when they should use low lock and high lock...alot of the peolpe around here...that go mudding...all like...hell ya...throw it in low lock and go wth it... when that will stick you as fast as anything

VOTE AZFX4 for truck of the month
