Default Tranfer case grinding into 4H and 4L from N

Hey guys new to this site so sorry ahead of time.

So I have a:
-1998 F-150
- Automatic tranny
-manual transfer case (4406 Borg Warner)
- Unit runs good and drives fine with no noise
- About a month ago noticed unit would hesitate and feel like it was binding when the unit went into R but only for the first initial movement (This no longer happens, seemed to go away after coils and spark plugs where done)
- Have check transfer case fluid (Good level, slightly dark, no metal or debris found)

Unit running, tranny in N, shifting transfer case from 2H to 4H (shifts nice, no noise), but when I shift the transfer case from 4H to N then attempt to shift to 4H or 4L the unit grinds and bangs into the shift.

Doing some research the only syncro I see is for 2H to 4H. I do not see a syncro between 4H and 4L. So how does the transfer case slow the gradual movement of the tranny to mesh between 4H and 4L?
Also it seem that my 4H and 4L are all controlled through the planetary gear, is this an indication of that planetary starting to fail?
