I'd pick a new garage. My guess would be you've got one bad actuator. In 4wd one side should make a rattle, that's the one that's bad. If the hubs were bad, you'll normally hear it when rolling in 2wd as well. For one actuator:

$136 OEM MSRP, 1.5 hours labor per alldata.

I just picked up a "Scrapyard Special" 2000 XL and it was a tank all winter. And living in Niagara, ON, it paid its dues. Issues happen, but 4x4 wasnt any of em. For ref, it had 312xxx km when I bought it, its at 317xxx now.

I've had 3 ford 4x4 vehicles and the only issue I ever had was the vaccum hubs on the ranger going out after 180k miles....

I would consider getting a limited slip vs locker if you are mostly on the road. with a locker option, you get open diff when the lock is disengaged. enjoy LS for the road use and if you really need the traction get a locker for the front...they aren't that expensive since for the front you won't need a "selectable" locker

i put 35,000km on my 09 and now at 43,000km on my 2011 with no 4x4 problems at all. i have had ford trucks my whole life. the only 4x4 problem i have had was a bad locking hub on my old 79. it's to be expected though with everything i put that truck through.

I just want to give a big shout-out to everyone who commented on this topic... Thanks in large part to your reassurance, I pulled the trigger on a new truck this past Tuesday night.

I am now the proud owner of a 2014 F-150 XLT SCrew 4x4 with the 5.0 and 302A package.

Trade was a 2013 F-150 XLT 4x2 with the 5.0 and 302A had about 14k miles.

All-in-all I came out well, the trade was only about 8 months old, but with the deal I dropped another 2 points on my interest rate and they gave me $1k over what I owed. Payments are about $20 more per month.

I haven't had much time this week to do anything to it, except for getting the front winnows tinted, entire truck detailed and my DBS bug screen installed.

First impressions...

- The new truck has the HID headlights, all I can say is WOW... Way better than my 2013 that had standard lights (not sure how I lived with them after seeing the HID's)!!

- I was 100% up to date on my Sync firmware on my 2013 and it shows that this truck is 100% up to date as well, but the 2014 Sync seems to perform much better. I feed Sync with a 64Gb USB thumb stick with about 3k songs on it -- I was having a lot of problems with the radio changing to a different input after starting the truck, haven't had a single issue so far. Maybe there were some updates in between?

- The new truck does not have the premium sound package and neither did my 2013... But overall I think it sounds better than the 2013... It actually sounds like there is bass, even when on Sirius.

- Have the 3.55 Elocker now, where as the 2013 had 3.31 and no locker. Haven't seem much difference here, but that will probably change once we start hauling around a camper some.
