The f150s are pretty capable off-road. What year range are you looking for specifically. The 09+ trucks come with a select-able rear locker on certain packages. Prior to 09 they only offered a limited slip. The 4x4 offroad and fx4 packages have skid plates. There is also a ton of after market support for them. For purely offroad purposes though Id say your XJ is more capable with the proper mods but for an all purpose DD that you can offroad in the 150 is a pretty good option plus it will pull those boats just fine.

OK...sell the XJ...Buy the F150 and then get an ATV for Off Road (maybe used to save $$$)...the Ford could carry it in the bed or pull it on a small trailer

I'm looking more at the 04-08 XLT's
I'm not sure what differences the 4x4 and fx4 have (I thought maybe different 4wd systems)
and I've even found an 04 with the Triton 5.4 for a very good price.

Do you know of any websites with there technical descriptions available ?

On the 04-08 4x4 f150's the xlt's could be had with 4.6 or 5.4 liter engine, 3.55 or 3.73 rear gears, (4.10's in the HD payload trucks), in limited slip and non limited slip.

The FX4 package was a trim package consisting of a more dressed-up interior, skid plates, wheel opening moldings (fender flares), painted bumpers instead of chrome, and only came with the 5.4 liter v8, with 3.73 limited slip rear end.

Now I get it, thankyou.
What would you say is a reasonable price for an 05 f150 fx4 with 175k miles?

Not sure about pricing. In NC depending on the condition Id say that truck would be in the 12-15 range. My only recommendation would be make sure what ever truck you buy has skid plates. Not all 4x4 f150s have skid plates. The limited slip would be a plus to.

Your XJ will hold up a lot beter in the woods.

My f150 ate through front end parts like candy. You have a straight axle, these have IFS.

Understood. I'm still new to the whole IFS thing.
What does it actually stand for ?
