mudding in a 4x4 is fun, in a 4x2 is fun too, until you stop. then its a PITA. off roading in a 4x2 is very doable, but requires a lot more momentum, HP/TQ, and larger diameter tires just to get and keep moving. Trophy trucks are the king of 4x2 offroad, but you see what they have to Mod out just to do it.

So you're saying they wouldn't have to do as much work if they were 4x4? Lol

Years ago I used to know a guy with a 90s ranger that was a 2 Wheel Dr. and as low options as possible. He actually got it from an auto parts store. He put a lift on it, 31 inch mud tires, and a locker in the rear. He wheeled the hell out of it and his thought process was if he couldn't just drive over it he'd hit it with speed.

Only problem was when he got stuck he was done. He pretty much just had a strap on each end at all times. He'd toss a strap and we'd yank him out or over/through anything he was stuck on.

It was hard on the truck though. Hitting stuff with speed over and over and over...

You can, and you'll learn a lot of tricks and techniques with your truck that many 4x4 wheelers won't learn. I wheeled my 2002 f150 2wd, with only bfg rugged terrains and a 12k winch, and it was a lot of fun. I took it through all kind of 4x4 mud trails.
The main difference is that you'll need to hit stuff faster.

I have a 2000 4x2 f150 with 3in coil spring spacers in the front and 1in blocks in the back. its open diff and with stock size cooper at3's and follow 4x4's around in the mud. I would recommend a locker witch is what I plan on getting.

1. Get good tires
2. Get a good level (not spacers)
3. Get a rear locker
4. Tow straps
5. Know your abilities and the abilities of your truck (practice)

Tires/Lift/Rear Locker or Detroit TruTrac will go a long way. Should be good for Jeep Roads and light wheelin'. Definitely need to go with a 4WD and make sure you have recovery points front and rear on your truck.

Youll spend a lot of time getting pulled out. We had a guy in our 4x4 club that had a busted front diff for several months. We all got tired of yanking his butt out and refused to do so if he went with us. He finally fixed it.

You say your buddy will pull you out, Well what when he gets tuck? Your not going to be able to pull him out unless you can reach pavement with your tow straps. Just a bad idea.

If you are going to try it. Spend the money to get a full on locker for the rear. I recommend ARB, but you still wont keep up with the 4x4s
