Is it wise or unwise to get a levelling kit AND new shocks?

What should I look for with shocks?

I live in the northeast and do my off-roading in fields and rocky, muddy mountain trails. Are there qualities I should look for or avoid in terrain like this?

Not really familiar with this kind of stuff yet, just looking for general buyer's info.

Thanks for any suggestions.

BTW, I have a 2007 XLT.
Is the 2.5" lift you are getting due to a spacer? The worry isn't combining a spacer with shocks unless you are planning on getting coilovers and cranking them... not a good idea. Getting 2.5" of more lift with a spacer is not good for your UCAs whether you are planning on off-roading or not. The angle is too extreme. Sure many have done it and claimed thay had no issues. But it's more wear and tear and there are better setups to go with. Just the look of it should be enough of a visual to stray away from.

You take the stock lower spring perch from your truck and either put it on 3 different locations on the strut. 0, 1, 2. So the lift is achieved by compressing the stock coil spring to different heights.

ANyone know how I can find out the compressed/extended length of my current shocks? Or better yet, anyone know what lengths I should get if I want a 2.5'' lift in the front? (Got my eye on fox and king...)

I'm having trouble finding that information on the internet. I would rather know for myself before talking to a mechanic.

I'm not gonna install the levelling kit.... :P.... I definately want front shocks that will do the levelling for me.

O, also, why are the shock absorbers from Skyjacker $45.00 and those from King $1500??? Did I read something wrong??? I saw that the skyjackers didnt come with springs but that still doesnt seem right. I've seen whole lift kits for the price of those King coil-overs...
